Volleyball Sweeps Shippensburg to Advance to PSAC Semifinals

4573Marissa Erminio and Maura Brehl each had 10 kills to lead the fourth-seeded Pitt-Johnstown volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-19, 27-25 sweep over fifth-seeded Shippensburg in Tuesday's quarterfinals of the 2017 PSAC Championships.  Pitt-Johnstown, 24-8 on the season, advances to take on the winner of No. 1 seed Indiana (PA)/No. 8 seed Edinboro match in Friday's PSAC Semifinals at a site to be determined.
 
Shippensburg erased an early three-point deficit in the first set to go up 13-11 on kills from Morgan DeFloria and Kendall Johnson.  Pitt-Johnstown came back to tie it at 17 and regain the lead 19-18 with two straight Marissa Erminio kills.  The Mountain Cats went on to outscore the Raiders, 6-2, the rest of the way to take the 25-20 win on Kendall Mahony's kill.
 
In set two, J.C. Longeville's service ace gave Pitt-Johnstown a 6-2 advantage, but Shippensburg battled back to outscore the Mountain Cats 10-5 to knot it at 12 on Emily Hangen's kill.  Pitt-Johnstown never gave up the lead and pushed it out to 23-17, before Caitlin Vrabel's kill, followed by a Shippensburg attack error secured the 25-19 win and put the Mountain Cats up 2-sets-to-none.
 
A Pitt-Johnstown attack error and a Kendall Johnson kill helped Shippensburg race out to a 9-3 lead.  It' didn't last long because Pitt-Johnstown answered with an 8-2 run, capped by Brehl's kill, that tied it at 11.  Pitt-Johnstown 4571went in front 13-12 on a Kendall Mahony and Erminio block but it stayed close the rest of the way.  The Raiders forced set point at 24-23, but the Mountain Cats tied it at 25 used a block from Noelle Carota and Mahony and a kill from Mahony to seal the 267-25 victory.
 
Erminio finished with 10 kills, 16 digs, and a pair of blocks while Brehl added 10 kills and two blocks.  Pitt-Johnstown also got eight kills and 12 digs from Cambria Wierman, seven kills and two blocks from Carota, and five kills and three blocks from Mahony.  Vrabel also had three kills and a match-high four blocks.
 
Allison Mondoff led the Mountain Cats with 20 set assists, while Longeville had 19 assists, 13 digs, and two aces.  Devan Orr led everyone with 26 digs.
 
Shippensburg, which dropped to 21-11 on the year, got a match-high 11 kills from Kendall Johnson, and 1o kills apiece from Gabriella Johnson and DeFlauria.
