
Third-seeded Pitt-Johnstown (27-8) got a match-high 14 kills, seven digs, and two blocks from
Marissa Erminio and wasted little time advancing to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Volleyball Semifinals by sweeping sixth-seeded Seton Hill University, 29-27, 25-13, and 25-11 in Thursday's Quarterfinals at the McDonough Center in Wheeling, W.Va. The Mountain Cats advance to take on No. 2-seeded Gannon University in the Semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m.
Pitt-Johnstown jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead, but Seton Hill stayed in it and eventually knotted it at nine and took a 12-10 lead f its own on. The Mountain Cats tied it at 16, then again at 18 on but, before the Griffins to pushed it out to 21-18. It stayed close with both team fighting off set points, but the Mountain Cats were able to close out the 29-27 win on kills from
Cambria Wierman and Erminio.
It was all Pitt-Johnstown in the second set. After Erminio's kill gave the Mountain Cats a 6-2 lead to start, Seton Hill scored three straight points on Maggie Murray's serve to get to within one. However, Pitt-Johnstown went on to outscore the Griffins 19-8 the rest of the way to take a 2-sets-to none lead with the 25-13 victory. Two straight blocks from
Kendall Mahony, followed by kills from
Maura Brehl and Mahony capped a 12-5 run that gave Pitt-Johnstown an 18-10 advantage.
Coco Kordenbrock's service ace pushed it into double digits and
Noelle Carota finished the 12-point win with a kill.
The Mountain Cats started fast in the third set and went on to complete the sweep with a lopsided 25-11 victory. Pitt-Johnstown took advantage of a Carota/Mahony blocks and another ace from Kordenbrock to run out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back. Seton Hill was able to narrow it to 13-8, but a kill by Erminio and a Griffins' attack error got the Pitt-Johnstown lead back out to eight, before another error by Seton Hill made it 20-10. The Mountain Cats went on to score five of the next six points, including Mahony's block and a Seton Hill bad set, the propelled Pitt-Johnstown into Friday's semifinals.
Along with Erminio, Brehl had nine kills and five blocks, while Mahony collected seven kills and five blocks, and Carota had seven kills and a pair of blocks to lead Pitt-Johnstown. Wierman tallied six kills and eight digs, and
Caitlin Vrabel had three blocks.
Allison Mondorff and
J.C. Longeville each had 20 sets assists, and
Devan Orr led the way with 16 digs, and Kordenbrock had a match-high three aces for the Mountain Cats.
The Griffins, whose season came to an end with a 22-8 overall record, were led by Viktoria Farrian's eight kills and Jillian Livorse's seven kills, 10 digs, and two blocks.
