IUP Takes Pair of PSAC Softball Games From Pitt-Johnstown

Indiana, PA

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
4307IUP broke open a three-run game with five runs in the sixth inning to take Monday's opening game of a PSAC doubleheader in Indiana, 9-1, before completing the sweep with a 4-2 victory in game two.  Pitt-Johnstown is now 10-12 overall and 2-6 in the PSAC Central Division.

Pitt-Johnstown took a 1-0 lead in the opener, but IUP scored nine unanswered runs of their own the rest of the way to secure the 9-1 victory.

McKenna Kern was hit by a pitch to lead-off Pitt-Johnstown's second inning and scored on Amanda O'Toole's double to center.

However, the Crimson Hawks quickly tied it in their half of the second, before increasing it to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the fifth.

IUP then broke it open with five more runs in the sixth, highlighted by Kassie Kesnick's three-run double that gave the Crimson Hawks the run-shortened victory.

O'Toole went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Morgan Cannin and Taylor Hoover accounted for the other two Pitt-Johnstown hits.

Samantha Frey took the loss and slipped to 1-2 after allowing all nine runs (8 earned) on 13 IUP hits.

Lauren Goetz had four hits and drove in a run, and Kesnick added three hits and three RBI for the Crimson Hawks.

In game two, IUP starting pitcher Megan Risinger helped her own cause with a solo home run in the third put the Crimson Hawks in front 1-0.

IUP increased it to 3-0 in the fourth on Kesnick's RBI double and a run-scoring single from Amanda Spindler.

The Crimson Hawks added another run in the fifth on Kaitlyn Beers' homer to center, before Pitt-Johnstown cut the deficit in half with two runs in the sixth.  Marley Elbin singled, advanced to second an IUP error, and scored on Hoover's double to center, before Kelsey Feeney's single up the middle scored Ashley Shor from third.

That was as close as Pitt-Johnstown would get.  Lauren Zola replaced Risinger in the circle and pitched a perfect seventh inning to preserve the 4-2 win.

Feeney had three hits and drove in a run, and Hoover added an RBI double for Pitt-Johnstown.  Kern doubled, and Elbin and O'Toole each collected singles.

Melissa Wagner suffered the loss after surrendering four earned runs in six innings.  Wagner, now 7-5 on the year, also fanned six and didn't allow a walk.

With the sweep, the Crimson Hawks improved to 12-13 overall and 4-4 in the PSAC Central.

Pitt-Johnstown will play non-conference doubleheaders at Seton Hill on Tuesday and at Salem International (WV) on Wednesday, before traveling to Bloomsburg for a PSAC doubleheader on Friday.
