After a 4-0 win in Saturday's first game of a PSAC doubleheader at V.E. Erickson Complex, Mansfield University scored a run in the top of the eighth and held off Pitt-Johnstown to complete the sweep with a 5-4 win in game two. Pitt-Johnstown is now 13-17 overall and 2-10 in the PSAC Central.
In the opener, Kayla Hahn's RBI double scored Taylor Chidester, and Leah McGovern followed with an RBI single to give Mansfield a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
The Mountaineers then used three hits and a Pitt-Johnstown throwing error to score two more runs in the fourth inning.
Pitt-Johnstown loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth, but Mansfield starter Ari Young was able to work out of the jam and to hold the four-run advantage.
Marley Elbin and
Amber Maurer each had two hits for Pitt-Johnstown, while
Morgan Cannin and
Taylor Hoover each singled.
Melissa Wagner fell to 9-7 after surrendering four runs (3 earned) on seven hits in seven innings.
Young earned the complete-game shutout for Mansfield. Young scattered six hits, struck out four, and didn't allow a walk.
In game two,
Samantha Frey got the first two outs to start the game, but Mansfield strung together three straight hits to take a 2-0 lead.
Pitt-Johnstown came back with two in the bottom of the second.
Amanda O'Toole led off with a double and scored on
Kelsey Feeney's double to the gap in left center.
Ashley Shor then singled to right and Feeney came around to score on an error by Melanie Taylor.
Cannin's single to left in the fourth plated Feeney put Pitt-Johnstown in front, but Mansfield answered with two unearned runs in its next at-bat to regain the lead 4-3 on Taylor's two-run single.
Pitt-Johnstown tied it in the bottom of the seventh after Cannin singled, stole second, and scored on Rachael Sterner's throwing error.
However, Leah McGovern led-off Mansfield eighth inning with a double. Pinch runner Nikki Watkins moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored what turned out to be the game-winning run on Allison McGovern's base hit.
Connor Decker picked-up the win in relief of Sierra Storm after pitching three innings, including a perfect eighth inning.
Cannin was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Feeney doubled and drove in one for Pitt-Johnstown. O'Toole had two hits, including a double.
Samantha Frey pitched all eight innings in the circle for Pitt-Johnstown but suffered the loss and slipped to 2-4. Frey allowed five runs (3 earned) on 11 hits.
With the sweep, Mansfield improved to 20-9 overall and 8-4 in the PSAC Central.
Pitt-Johnstown will host a PSAC Central doubleheader against Clarion on Friday starting at 2:30 p.m. at V.E. Erickson Complex, before traveling to Lock Haven for another conference doubleheader on Saturday.
