Softball Suffers Pair of PSAC Losses at Mansfield

3786After splitting a pair of home games to open the PSAC schedule on Saturday, the Pitt-Johnstown softball team made its first conference road trip on Sunday and suffered 11-1 and 4-2 losses at Mansfield University.  Taylor Hoover, McKenna Kern, and Morgan Cannin all had an RBI for Pitt-Johnstown, which slipped to 9-9 overall and 1-3 in the PSAC Central.
 
In game one, Mansfield scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised to the 11-1 run-shortened victory.
 
Allison McGovern led-off the Mountaineers' first inning with a double off of Pitt-Johnstown starter Melissa Wagner, and Laura Lawson followed two batters later with a two-run home run to left field.
 
Mansfield went on to add six more runs in the frame, before making it 10-0 in the third on an RBI single from Rachel Sterner and a sacrifice fly from Anastasia Hester.
 
3787Pitt-Johnstown answered with its lone run in the top of the fourth.  Marley Elbin earned a lead-off walk and eventually scored on Taylor Hoover's base hit to right center.
 
Mansfield pitcher Ari Young held Pitt-Johnstown to just one run on three hits in the complete-game effort.  Amber Maurer doubled in the fifth inning, and Kern and Hoover each singled.
 
Wagner lasted just 1/3 of an inning and fell to 6-4 after allowing five runs on five hits.  Samantha Frey pitched the final 3 2/3 innings for Pitt-Johnstown and gave up six runs (3 earned) on seven hits.
 
In game two, Sterner belted a two-run homer in Mansfield first at-bat
 
Kayla Hahn's two-run single in the Mountaineers' third inning increased it to 4-0, before Pitt-Johnstown cut it to 4-1 with a run in the sixth after Montana Mang doubled and scored on Kern's two-out double.
 
3780Pitt-Johnstown added another run in the seventh when Courtney McMahan doubled and scored on Cannin's infield single, but Mansfield reliever Connor Decker was able to work out of the jam to preserve Mansfield's 4-2 win.
 
Kern singled, doubled and drove in one, while Mang and McMahan each had a double for Pitt-Johnstown.  Cannin collected an RBI single, and Lyndsey Weiser and Elbin also had hits form Pitt-Johnstown.
 
Frey started for Pitt-Johnstown and pitched and surrendered four runs on nine Mansfield hits over the first 3 2/3 innings.  Emily Moore was in the circle for the final 2 1/3 innings and held the Mountaineers scoreless on one hit.
 
With the sweep, Mansfield improved to 12-7 overall and evened its record at 2-2 in the PSAC Central.
 
Pitt-Johnstown travels to a non-conference doubleheader at Salem International (WV) on Tuesday, before playing PSAC doubleheaders at Clarion on Friday and at Indiana (PA) on Saturday.
