Pitt-Johnstown Wins Series Opener against IUP

5448The Pitt-Johnstown Mountain Cats baseball team won their conference opener against the Indiana (Pa.) Crimson Hawks Sunday afternoon, 7-6 at Point Stadium. The Mountain Cats improved to 4-10 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC West. The Crimson Hawks fell to 3-10 overall and 0-1 in the PSAC West.
 
Indiana's Chris Eisel leadoff the game with a single to center field and came around to score on a Matt Swartz infield single, to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
 
The Mountain Cats answered with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Scott Thompson had a leadoff single through the right side followed by a Zach Zinn and Cam Gerhard walk, to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Thompson to score and a throwing error on the play allowed Gerhard to score to make it, 2-1 Mountain Cats.
 
Mason Prickett made it, 3-1 with a sacrifice fly that scored Zinn. Pitt-Johnstown added another run to make it 4-1 when Dylan Kersetter grounded out to third base allowing Tanner Cook to score.
 
In the top of the fifth inning, The Crimson Hawks added a run after an Eisel and Cory Wheeler singles to put runners on first and third. Wheeler was thrown out trying to score and Eisel came home to score on the play.
 
Tied at 6-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh with two outs, Dan Clark and Thompson drew back-to-back walks. Gerhard reached on an infield single that allowed Clark to score on a throwing error.
 
Pitt-Johnstown Starter Brady Walker got a no decision. Walker pitched five innings, giving up two-earned runs on eight hits and striking out two. Shane Supanick picked up the win, Supanick pitched 1.2 innings giving up two runs on two hits and also striking out two.
 
Indiana's starting pitcher Colin Claus also had a no decision. He pitched 2.1 innings giving up four runs, two earned on one hit and walking six. Jeff Allen took the loss for Indiana, he pitched 4.1 innings giving up three runs, zero earned, two hits while walking four and  striking out three.
