Volleyball Bounces Back to Sweep Crimson Hawks in PSAC-Play

5961Noelle Carota had a match-high 12 kills and six digs, and Caitlin Vrabel added 11 kills and three blocks to help the Pitt-Johnstown volleyball team bounce back from Friday's loss at Clarion with a 25-9, 25-19, 25-23 PSAC sweep at Indiana University (PA), Saturday afternoon.  The Mountain Cats improved to 5-7 overall and evened their record at 1-1 in the PSAC Central.
 
It was all Mountain Cats on their way to a 25-9 opening-set win.  Pitt-Johnstown broke open an early 3-point advantage with a 14-2 run and never looked back.  After Indiana (PA) cut it to 7-4, the Mountain Cats began the run and scored 11 straight points on Erin Carmody's serve, including a kill from Maura Brehl and a combined block from Brehl and Carota the made it 21-6, before kills from Vrabel and Carota closed out the set.
 
Pitt-Johnstown continued its dominance in the second set.  Brehl's kill, followed by Carmody's service ace made it 11-5, and a kills from Grace Miller and a Crimson Hawk attack error extended it to 18-8.  Indiana (PA) was able to cut it to 22-17 with a 9-4 run, capped by Jessica Ignace's kill, but the Mountain Cats went on to the 25-19 win on a block from Miller and Vrabel.
 
5957The third set was much closer.  The Crimson Hawks erased an early three-point deficit with an 8-1 spurt to go in front 13-9 on Jasmine Raudy's kill.  Pitt-Johnstown narrowed it to 15-14 on kills from Vrabel and Brehl, then knotted it at 19 on Carota's kill.  After Miller's ace gave the lead back Mountain Cats on the next point, Indiana (PA) tied it at 23, but Brehl's kill and a Crimson Hawks' attack error allowed Pitt-Johnstown to complete the sweep with the 25-23 win.
 
Brehl had eight kills and 12 digs, and Miller chipped-in six kills to go along with Carota and Vrabel's efforts for Pitt-Johnstown.
 
J.C. Longeville collected 24 set assists, Morgan Yurkovich had 12 assists, and Carmody tallied 14 digs and three aces.
 
Indiana (PA), which fell to 4-10 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC Southwest, was led by Kylie Osborn's 11 kills and Ignace's five kills
 
The Mountain Cats will make their 2018 home debut in the Sports Center with PSAC matches against California University (PA) on Friday at 7 p.m. and Seton Hill University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
