Noelle Carota had a match-high 20 kills and eight digs, but it wasn't enough, as Seton Hill came into the Sports Center on Saturday and dealt the Pitt-Johnstown volleyball team a 25-17, 25-23, and 25-22 PSAC Southwest Division sweep. With loss, the Mountain Cats fell to 11-10 overall and 3-8 in the PSAC Southwest.
Seton Hill started fast and jumped out to a 11-4 first-set advantage on Erin Parks service ace, before Pitt-Johnstown cut it to 11-6 on kills from
Tatiana Pitcher and
J.C. Longeville. That was as close as it would get. The Griffins scored the next six points to go in front 17-6 on Jillian Livorse's kill, before taking the set 25-17 on another kill from Livorse.
After Pitt-Johnstown took its first lead of the match at 4-2 to open the second set, Seton Hill followed with an 8-2 run, capped by Livorse's kill and a Mountain Cat attack error, to take a 10-6 lead. The Mountain Cats cut it to 20-18, before fending off four straight set points to make it 24-23 on Longeville's ace. However, Viktoria Farian's kill stopped the Pitt-Johnstown comeback and gave the Griffins a close, 25-23 win.
In the third set, Seton Hill erased a one-point deficit and outscored the Mountain Cats 5-1 to go on top 14-11, but Pitt-Johnstown used an
Anna Johns block and a Griffins ball handling error to knot it at 15. Seton Hill followed with six consecutive points, including three straights aces from Farian, to rebuild the lead to 21-15 on its way to a three set sweep with the 25-22 victory.
Along with Carota, Pitcher had nine kills and five digs, and
Caitlin Vrabel collected seven kills and five digs for Pitt-Johnstown. The Mountain Cats also got six kills from
Lauren Gechter and five blocks from Johns.
Longeville had a match-high 42 set assists and nine digs, while
Erin Carmody tallied a match-high 21 digs, and
Gabi DeRenzo chipped-in seven digs for Pitt-Johnstown.
Seton Hill, which improved to 12-8 overall and 7-4 in the PSAC Southwest, was led by Livorse's 13 kills and 20 digs and Farian's eight kills, four aces, and 12 digs.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to PSAC matches at Clarion and Slippery Rock on Friday and Saturday, before hosting conference against Mercyhurst on November 7, Edinboro on November 8, and Gannon on November 9.
