Gannon Sweeps Pair of PSAC Games From Mountain Cats, 6-5 and 4-0

Erie, PA

Gannon rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 6-5, walk-off victory over Pitt-Johnstown in Saturday's first game of a PSAC Western Division doubleheader in Erie.  The Golden Knights completed the sweep with a 4-0 win in the nightcap to keep Mountain Cat Coach Todd Williams one win shy of 500 for his career. Pitt-Johnstown is now 20-16 overall and 8-10 in the PSAC West.

In the opener, The Mountain Cats turned a pair of Gannon errors into four unearned runs in the top of the second.  Lennox Pugh scored from third on Jack Shirk's ground ball that was misplayed by Justin Hamm, before three more runs came across on Zach Zinn's on another error by Hamm.

Ian Steighner doubled to lead off the Gannon half of the third and scored on Nate Cardy's base hit to get the Golden Knights on the scoreboard, but Pugh's fielder's choice in the Mountain Cats' fifth chased home Scott Thompson, who led off the inning with a double, to make it 5-1.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh when Ian Hess doubled to lead off and Hamm followed with a two-run home run to narrow the Gannon Gap to 5-3.  The Golden Knights weren't done yet.  Luke Callahan drew a four pitch off of Pitt-Johnstown starter Ben Foose, before Ryan Kalbfus' pinch-hit, two-run homer knotted it at five.

Jake Ansell entered the game in relief of Foose and struck out Steighner for the first out.  However, Ansell walked Brandon Wetherholt and hit Cardy with a pitch to put runners on first and second.  Elijah Quiceno then doubled to right field to give Gannon the walk-off victory.

Ansell suffered the loss and slipped to 0-1.  Foose got the no-decision after allowing five runs on eight hits in 6-plus innings.

Shirk and Pugh each doubled, singled and drove in a run, and Thompson added two doubles for the Mountain Cats.

Alex Dobry picked up the victory in relief for Gannon after pitching a scoreless top of the seventh.  Eric Sapp started and gave up five runs (1 earned) on six hits over the first five innings.

In game two, Wetherholt's three-run homer in the bottom of the second put the Golden Knights in front, before Gannon increased it to 4-0 with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth.

That's all the Golden Knights needed.  Four Gannon pitchers held Pitt-Johnstown to just three hits, singles by Thompson, Zinn, and Asher Corl.

Joel Colledge fell to 0-5 after surrendering four runs (3 earned) on just three hits in five innings.

With the sweep, the Golden Knights improved to 25-11 overall and 15-5 in the PSAC West.

Pitt-Johnstown visits Seton Hill for a PSAC Western Division doubleheader on Friday, before concluding the four-game series with the Griffins with a pair of games at Point Stadium on Saturday.
