Jaden Gray collected a match-high 18 kills and added 13 digs to help the Pitt-Johnstown volleyball team to a 3-sets-to-1 victory over Stonehill (MA) College in Saturday's first round of the Stonehill Tournament in Easton, Mass. The Mountain Cats improved to 3-2.
In a tight match that saw three of the four set go into extra points, Pitt-Johnstown took the first two sets 28-26 and 30-28. Stonehill answered with a 26-24 win in the third set, but the Mountain Cats closed out the victory with a 25-20 win in the final set.
Along with Gray,
Caitlin Vrabel had nine kills and four blocks, and
Grace Miller had eight kills and three blocks to lead Pitt-Johnstown. The Mountain Cats also got a match-high six blocks from
Anna Johns.
J.C. Longeville led the way for Pitt-Johnstown with 36 set assists, nine digs, and a pair of service aces, while
Erin Carmody tallied a match-high 28 digs, and
Gabi DeRenzo chipped-in 12 digs for the Mountain Cats.
Stonehill's Basia Peragine's12 kills paced three Skyhawks who finished in double digits in kills. Sophia Poveda and Clare Feeman each had 10 kills for Stonehill, which suffered its first loss of the season and slipped to 3-1.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to the Lake Erie (OH) Tournament on September 21, before opening its home schedule with PSAC matches against Shepherd (WV) on September 27 and Shippensburg on September 28.
