Volleyball Suffers Three-Set Senior Day Conference Loss to Gannon

After holding on for a 25-21 first set win, Gannon took the next two sets 25-11 and 25-17 to deal the Pitt-Johnstown volleyball team a 3-0 PSAC Western Division loss on Saturday's Senior Day in the Sports Center.  Grace Miller's seven kills, three block assists, and 15 digs led the Mountain Cats, now 12-9 overall and 5-7 in conference-play.
 
Prior to the match, Coach Morgan Mammosser and the Pit-Johnstown volleyball program recognized the 2021 seniors…Erin Carmody, Shaelyn Foy, Lauren Gechter, Grace Miller, Rebecca Miller, and Cassie Pascarella.
 
After exchanging the lead early in the opening set, Pitt-Johnstown took a 16-11 lead on kills from Cassie Pascarella and Grace Miller.  Gannon took advantage of three kills from Ashley Kerestes and a pair of kills from Sam Deinek in an 8-2 run to regain the lead, 19-18, then broke a 21-all tie with four straight points to take the set 25-21.
 
The Golden Knights controlled the second set from the start and raced out to a 15-5 lead, before cruising to a 25-11 victory on a Lauren Sampson kill.
 
In a much tighter beginning to the third set, Katelyn Courtney and Lualis Alvarado's block knotted it at 11, but Gannon answered with four straight kills from Deinek to go up 15-11.  Two Elizah Wilson kills and a Golden Knights' error got the Mountain Cats back to within two, at 17-15.  That was as close as Pitt-Johnstown could get, Gannon went on to outscore the Mountain Cats 8-2 down the stretch to wrap-up the sweep with the 15-17 win.
 
Along with Miller, Alvarado had six kills and11 digs and Pascarella added six kills and two block assists for Pitt-Johnstown.  Courtney had four block assists.
 
Adiamar Beaz's 25 set assists led the way for the Mountain Cats, while Carmody's match-high 30 digs paced Pitt-Johnstown.
 
Gannon, which improved to 22-5 overall and 9-3 in the PSAC West, was led by Deinek's match-high 12 kills and two block assists, and Kerestes' nine kills, one solo block, and six block assists.
 
Pitt-Johnstown will close out the 2021 regular season with four straight road PSAC matches beginning with Seton Hill on Friday and California (PA) on Saturday.
