Magestro Nets Career-High 23 Points; Mountain Cats Complete Sweep of Previously Unbeaten PSAC East Opponents

Magestro_Drew.jpgPitt-Johnstown completed a sweep of previously undefeated PSAC East opponents, cruising to a lopsided 83-51 victory over host Millersville University Saturday afternoon in a crossover game.

On Friday, the Mountain Cats handed West Chester its first loss of the season, 78-70, in its PSAC opener.

Pitt-Johnstown, which improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC West, used red-shot shooting to build a 32-point second-half lead against the Marauders (6-1, 1-1 PSAC East), who were dealt their first home loss in six games at Pucillo Gymnasium. 

The Mountain Cats were led by redshirt junior guard Drew Magestro, who scored 17 of his career-high 23 points in the first half as the visitors took a 41-22 halftime lead against Millersville, which was off to its best start since 2002.

Pitt-Johnstown, which has won two in a row and four of itsr past five games, also got 21 points from junior guard Fred Mulbah, who scored a career-high 27 a day earlier against West Chester, and 12 points from junior forward John Paul Kromka.

Mulbah_Fred.jpgMagestro, whose previous high was 21 points against Edinboro on Jan. 8, 2020, made 8 of 13 shots, including three 3-pointers. Mulbah made 6 of 9 shots and one 3, while Krormka was 5 of 7 from the field.

Overall, Pitt-Johnstown shot 53.8 percent (28 of 52) from the field and 44.4 percent (8 of 18) from 3-point range. The Mountain Cats also shot 90.5 percent from the free throw line, hitting 19 of 21 tries.

Millersville shot just 29.3 percent (17 of 38) from the floor and 16.7 percent (5 of 30) from behind the arc. Forward Caiden Najdawi and guard Jaden Faulkner had 11 points each for the Marauders.

Millersville opened the second half with a 7-0 run and pulled within 12 points at 41-29 on guard James Sullivan's 3 at the 17:36 mark. But the Mountain Cats seized control of the game once again, building a 32-point lead with 1:34 remaining on freshman forward Colin Cote's 3.

In the opening half, Najdawi tied the game for Millersville at 9-9 with a layup at 4:40 before Pitt-Johnstown used clutch shooting to open up a 28-10 lead.

Kromka_John_Paul.jpgMagestro scored 13 points during the stretch, hitting 5 of 7 shots from the floor, while UPJ made 11 of 14 attempts overall, including four 3-pointers and two free throws. Najdawi's layup at 9:14 finally ended the Mountain Cats' run.

Pitt-Johnstown's lead climbed to 36-12, but the Marauders scored 10 consecutive points to trim the deficit to 36-22 with 2:15 remaining. But junior guard Joe Batt's two free throws and Mulbah's 3 gave the Mountain Cats a 19-point halftime advantage. 

Coach Bob Rukavina's Mountain Cats will return home Dec. 14 for a 7:30 p.m. PSAC crossover game against Shepherd (W.Va.) at the Sports Center.
