Baseball Sweeps Clarion 11-5 and 9-8 to Open PSAC-Play

Johnstown, PA

Heid_DylanDylan Heid fanned 10 in 6.1 innings to lead Pitt-Johnstown to an 11-5 game one win over Clarion to open PSAC Western Division play, Friday afternoon at Sargent's Stadium at the Point.  The Mountain Cats completed the sweep with a 9-8 win in the nightcap on Dylan Broderick's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.  Pitt-Johnstown, which improved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference, also got seven hits from Alex Glumac in the doubleheader.
 
In game one, Pitt-Johnstown used a nine-run third inning to build a 10-1 lead on its way to the 11-5 victory.
 
The Mountain Cats took an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the first.  Glumac led off with a single and advanced to second on a Clarion error.  After a wild pitch, Glumac scored on Broderick's ground ball double play.
 
Clarion knotted it at one with a run in the top of the third when Daren Byers scored on a passed ball, but the Mountain Cats exploded for nine runs (5 unearned) Broderick_Dylanin the bottom of the third, highlighted by Jake Ansell's three-run homer to left and Glumac's three-run double down the right field line.
 
Broderick's RBI single in the Pitt-Johnstown fifth chased home Ansell from second to increase it to 11-1.
 
The Golden Eagles scored four in the top of the seventh to set the final at 11-5.
 
Heid improved to 3-0 after limiting Clarion to three runs (2 earned) on just two hits over the first 6.1 innings.  Heid also fanned 10 and walked two.  Antonio Caporossi tossed the final 2/3 of the seventh and gave up two runs on two hits.
 
Glumac went 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI and three runs, and Ansell added three hits, including a double and a three-run homerun, and four RBI for the Glumac_Alex.JPGMountain Cats.  Pitt-Johnstown also got two hits and a pair of runs from Wil Fetrow.
 
In game two, Pitt-Johnstown scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off with the 9-8 win.
 
Thomas Lavin's sacrifice fly and Nick Fugh's RBI groundout put Clarion in front in the top to start, but Tyler Smith's RBI single and Josh Reynolds' two-run single to center in the bottom of the first gave the lead to the Mountain Cats.
 
After the Golden Eagles regained the lead with two unearned runs in the third, Smith scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning to tie it at four.
 
Smith's two-out RBI double in the Pitt-Johnstown fourth made it 5-4, before Fugh's two run homer to left-center in the top of the sixth gave the lead back to Clarion.
 
The Mountain Cats answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth.  With two outs, Broderick tripled and scored on Smith's base hit to left.  Tyler Treese followed with a triple to right field to give Pitt-Johnstown the lead. 7-6.
 
Clarion loaded the bases in the top of the seventh and got back-to-back sacrifice flies from Kacey Shugart and Alex Ficorilli to go back on top.
 
However, in the bottom of the seventh, Ansell's single to center plated Colin Pasone to tie it at seven, and Broderick followed with a base hit to right that chased home Glumac with the walk-off game-winning run.

Glumac went 3-for-four with a pair of runs, while Smith had three hits, including a double, three RBI and three runs for the Mountain Cats.  Broderick added three hits, and RBI, and two runs, and had two hits and drove in two.
 
Jared Hoener picked up the win in relief and is now 1-1.  Hoener allowed one run in one inning of work.  Joe Colledge got the start and surrendered four runs (2 earns) on five hits over the first three innings.
 
With the losses, the Golden Eagles fell to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC West.
 
The Mountain Cats close out the PSAC series against Clarion Saturday 1 and 3 p.m. at Sargent's Stadium at the Point, before traveling to nationally-ranked Mercyhurst on Friday to open a four-game home-and-home conference series.
