Chase Vargo had two hits and drove in three, and
Lennox Pugh added two hits and a pair of RBI to lead Pitt-Johnstown to a 9-6 victory over California (PA) in Saturday's opener of PSAC Western Division doubleheader at Sargent's Stadium at the Point. The Vulcans took game two, 9-3, to get the split. The Mountain Cats are now 13-11 overall and 9-7 in the PSAC West.
In the opener, Pitt-Johnstown scored six third-inning runs and held on for the 9-6 victory.
Pitt-Johnstown struck for six runs in the bottom of the third.
Alex Glumac tripled to right and scored on
Jake Ansell's single to open the scoring.
Tyler Smith doubled Ansell to third and Pugh followed with a two run single and Vargo tripled home Pugh. The Mountain Cats then got an RBI double from Matt Reece and an RBI single from
Colin Pasone to make it 6-0.

Smith scored on a throwing error by Cal U shortstop Jacob McCaskey and Vargo added an RBI double in the Pitt-Johnstown fourth to increase it to 8-0.
The Vulcans cut the deficit to 8-6 with six runs in the top of the fifth, including McCaskey's grand slam to left.
Pitt-Johnstown added one more in the sixth to push it out to 9-6 after Pugh tripled with one out and scored on Reese's ground out.
Austin Hammerle was able to get the final three outs in the seventh to pick up his second save of the season.
Wil Fetrow improved to 1-2 after allowing four runs on six hits over the first four innings.
Vargo went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, and three RBI, while Pugh singled, tripled, drove in a pair and scored three runs for the Mountain Cats. Ansell and Reese also had two hits and an RBI apiece.
In game two, Cal U took advantage of six walks and a pair of wild pitches off of Mountain Cat starter Brady
Walker and reliever
Raymond Watt to open-up a 6-0 first inning lead.
Smith's ground out in the bottom of the first scored Glumac from third in bottom of the first cut it to 6-1, but Aaron Previsky's single to left scored Nick Serafino in the top of the third to get that run back for the Vulcans.
Smith's two-run homer down the left field line in the Pitt-Johnstown half of the third narrowed it to 7-3.
The Vulcans tacked on two more unearned runs in the top of the seventh and went on to the 9-3 victory.
Smith went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBI to pace the Mountain Cats. Glumac scored two runs, and
Jake Felton and Reese each had hits.
Brady Walker took the loss and slipped to 2-1 after allowing three earned runs in the first inning.
With the split, Cal U took 3-out-of 4 from the weekend series and improved to 19-9 overall and 10-6 in the PSAC West.
The Mountain Cats will begin a four-game PSAC Western Division series against Slippery Rock on Friday at 1 p.m. at Sargent's Stadium at the Point, before wrapping-up the series in Slippery Rock on Saturday.
