After adjusting the schedule due to weather, the Pitt-Johnstown softball team now host Mercyhurst University for a PSAC Western Division doubleheader on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. at V.E. Erickson Complex. The Mountain Cats will then make the trip to Erie on Monday to complete the four-game conference series.
Coach Niki Cognigni-Pecora's Pitt-Johnstown squad comes in at 3-11 overall and 3-9 in the PSAC Western Division. Prior to Wednesday's non-conference games at Millersville being postponed due to weather, the Mountain Cats lost three-out-of-four PSAC games to Clarion. Last Saturday, Pitt-Johnstown won the opener against the Golden Eagles, 6-5, behind
Laura Fox's three RBI and
Kristen Coffay's complete-game. However, Clarion won the next three, 14-1, 4-1, and 9-2.
Mercyhurst, under eighth-year
Coach Leanne Baker, is 8-6 overall and 8-6 in the PSAC West. After dropping 3-of-4 to Indiana (PA) on March 20 and 21, the Lakers came back with 16-7 and 8-5 conference wins over Edinboro last Saturday.
Pitt-Johnstown and Mercyhurst have split the only four games played between the two programs. In the Mountain Cats inaugural season of 2015, the Lakers dealt Pitt-Johnstown 3-1 and 1-0 losses in Johnstown on April 9. The Mountain Cats then swept Mercyhurst 5-4 and 8-4 in Erie on April 25, 2015.
Pitt-Johnstown travels Erie on Monday to close out the PSAC series against the Lakers, before visiting Indiana (PA) next Friday to begin a four-game home-and-home series. The Mountain Cats will host the Crimson Hawks next Saturday at 1 p.m. at V.E. Erickson Complex.
