Lualis Alvarado's match-high 18 kills were the catalyst behind Pitt-Johnstown's three-set sweep (25-20, 25-19, 25-22) of Point Park on Tuesday evening at the Sports Center. The Mountain Cats moved to 8-16 overall with the nonconference victory.
Freshman Natalie Lippincott matched her season-high 10 kills for the third consecutive game. Adiamar Beaz dished out a match-high 28 assists and five aces.
After rarely trailing throughout the first two sets, the Mountain Cats fell behind 5-1 to open the third set. The Pioneers would eventually hold a 19-15 advantage, but a kill by Alvarado sparked a 7-0 run to turn the tide and allow Pitt-Johnstown to take a 22-19 lead. Point Park cut the deficit to one at 23-22, but a kill and an ace from Alvarado ended it.Â
Mallory Pinske and Abi Leitner combined for eight kills. Gabi DeRenzo had 10 digs, while Beaz and Alvarado each had eight.
With the first set tied at 9-all, the Mountain Cats strung together an 8-1 run to go up 17-10 and roll to a 1-0 lead. Up 13-12 in the second set, Alvarado once again sparked a set-changing 8-1 burst to put Pitt-Johnstown in front 21-13.
Madison Sema notched a team-high 10 kills, and Stephanie Rivera-Pacheco added seven for the Pioneers, who dropped to 16-5.
