
After recognizing
Abi Leitner, this year's lone senior, the Pitt-Johnstown volleyball team got a career-high 25 kills and 12 digs from
Lualis Alvarado on its way to a five-set PSAC Western Division victory over Edinboro in Saturday's 2022 season finale in the Sports Center. The Mountain Cats closed out the season at 10-20 overall and 3-13 in conference-play.
In the opening set, Leitner's kill gave Pitt-Johnstown a three-point advantage. Edinboro came back to tie it at 10, but the Mountain Cats took control and outscored the Fighting Scots, 15-6, the rest of the way. A 9-0 run, capped by a
Karin Ilagan service ace and an Edinboro error made, it 19-10, before Pitt-Johnstown got a block from
Katelyn Courtney and Leitner to take the set, 25-16.
Edinboro answered to tie it at one set apiece with a 25-15 win in the second set. The Fighting Scots jumped out to a 9-4 lead then extended it to 14-5 on Erica Sharp's kills and two Pitt-Johnstown errors. The Mountain Cats got as close as seven at 22-15 on a kill from Courtney, but Edinboro went on the score the final three points.
Pitt-Johnstown held the lead for much of the third set and opened up a 13-9 lead on
Mallory Pinske's kills and an Edinboro attack error. Five straight points from the Fighting Scots tied it, before another kill from Courtney put

the Mountain Cats back up by four. It remained close and Pitt-Johnstown used Leitner's kill and another Edinboro attack error to hold on for a 27-25 win.
Neither team held a lead of more than two points in the fourth set until Pinske's kill put the Mountain Cats on top, 16-13. However, Edinboro got hot and used a 12-4 run to force a fifth set with a 25-20 victory.
In the final set, Alvarado's kill gave Pitt-Johnstown a quick 6-1 lead
In the final set, Pitt-Johnstown used Alvarado's kill to race out to a 6-1 lead. Edinboro cut it to 6-4, but the Mountain Cats pulled away and pushed the lead to 13-6 on a
Natalie Lippincott kill, before closing out the five-set with a 15-8 win on
Chloe Bidelman's ace.
Along with Alvarado, Leither had 10 kills and six digs in her final game as a Mountain Cat, while Pinske had nine kills and Lippincott added eight kills. Pitt-Johnstown also got five kills and five blocks from Courtney.
Adiamar Beaz finished with a match-high 51 assists and 10 digs, and
Gabi DeRenzo had a match-high 26 digs, three aces, and five assists.
Liredys Casiano also collected 20 digs for the Mountain Cats.
Edinboro, which closed out the regular season at 19-9 overall and 9-7 in the PSAC West, had four player in double figures in kills, led by Natalie Pallone's 15 kills and Bella Burrelli's 12 kills.
