Volleyball Closes Out 2022 Season With Senior Day and Five-Set Win Over Edinboro

Johnstown, PA

Leitner_Abi.jpgAfter recognizing Abi Leitner, this year's lone senior, the Pitt-Johnstown volleyball team got a career-high 25 kills and 12 digs from Lualis Alvarado on its way to a five-set PSAC Western Division victory over Edinboro in Saturday's 2022 season finale in the Sports Center.  The Mountain Cats closed out the season at 10-20 overall and 3-13 in conference-play.

In the opening set, Leitner's kill gave Pitt-Johnstown a three-point advantage.  Edinboro came back to tie it at 10, but the Mountain Cats took control and outscored the Fighting Scots, 15-6, the rest of the way.  A 9-0 run, capped by a Karin Ilagan service ace and an Edinboro error made, it 19-10, before Pitt-Johnstown got a block from Katelyn Courtney and Leitner to take the set, 25-16.

Edinboro answered to tie it at one set apiece with a 25-15 win in the second set.  The Fighting Scots jumped out to a 9-4 lead then extended it to 14-5 on Erica Sharp's kills and two Pitt-Johnstown errors.  The Mountain Cats got as close as seven at 22-15 on a kill from Courtney, but Edinboro went on the score the final three points.

Pitt-Johnstown held the lead for much of the third set and opened up a 13-9 lead on Mallory Pinske's kills and an Edinboro attack error.  Five straight points from the Fighting Scots tied it, before another kill from Courtney put Alvarado_Lualis.jpgthe Mountain Cats back up by four.  It remained close and Pitt-Johnstown used Leitner's kill and another Edinboro attack error to hold on for a 27-25 win.

Neither team held a lead of more than two points in the fourth set until Pinske's kill put the Mountain Cats on top, 16-13.  However, Edinboro got hot and used a 12-4 run to force a fifth set with a 25-20 victory.

In the final set, Alvarado's kill gave Pitt-Johnstown a quick 6-1 lead

In the final set, Pitt-Johnstown used Alvarado's kill to race out to a 6-1 lead.  Edinboro cut it to 6-4, but the Mountain Cats pulled away and pushed the lead to 13-6 on a Natalie Lippincott kill, before closing out the five-set with a 15-8 win on Chloe Bidelman's ace.

Along with Alvarado, Leither had 10 kills and six digs in her final game as a Mountain Cat, while Pinske had nine kills and Lippincott added eight kills.  Pitt-Johnstown also got five kills and five blocks from Courtney.

Adiamar Beaz finished with a match-high 51 assists and 10 digs, and Gabi DeRenzo had a match-high 26 digs, three aces, and five assists.  Liredys Casiano also collected 20 digs for the Mountain Cats.

Edinboro, which closed out the regular season at 19-9 overall and 9-7 in the PSAC West, had four player in double figures in kills, led by Natalie Pallone's 15 kills and Bella Burrelli's 12 kills.
