For the second consecutive day, Pitt-Johnstown needed to be at its best in the fourth quarter.
The Mountain Cats proved that they were more than up to the challenge after outscoring Millersville 29-14 in the final period to close out a 60-54 victory on Monday afternoon at the Sports Center.
Much like they did in Sunday's win over West Chester, Olivia Fasick and Peyton Alazaus led the way for the Mountain Cats with 15 points apiece. Ashley Norling notched a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds to help Pitt-Johnstown improve to 6-4 (3-1 PSAC). Norling also dished out five assists. Alazaus and Cassidy Crawford each pulled down five boards.
Pitt-Johnstown went into the final quarter trailing 40-31. But a 10-0 run that spanned three minutes and was capped off by a layup from Makalyn Clapper, who added nine points and six boards, put the Mountain Cats in front.
The Marauders tied the game at 44 thanks to two free throws from Taylor Langan, but Norling and Fasick each knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Mountain Cats a 4-point advantage, one they did not let slip away over the final three minutes.
Clinging to a 52-47 lead with just 1:25 to play, Pitt-Johnstown made all eight of its shots from the charity stripe down the stretch to stave off any thoughts of a comeback.
The Mountain Cats held a 10-9 lead at the end of the first after both teams struggled to shoot from the floor early on. Norling notched a layup with 1:18 left in the second as Pitt-Johnstown went into the locker room down 25-24.
Pitt-Johnstown racked up a 35-22 rebounding advantage and outscored the Marauders in the paint 32-26.
Langan scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed four boards for Millersville, which dropped to 6-4 (1-3 PSAC).
Following a 10-day Christmas break, the Mountain Cats travel to face Shepherd (WV) on Dec. 30 for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
