Basketball Teams to Host Key PSAC Games Against Cal U, Monday Night in Sports Center

         The Pitt-Johnstown men's and women's basketball teams will host a key PSAC Western Division doubleheader against California (PA), Monday night in the Sports Center.  The women will tip-off the at 5:30 p.m. with the men's game scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
 
      Head Coach Mike Drahos' (9th Season) Pitt-Johnstown squad, 11-13 overall and 9-9 in the PSAC, continue to hold the sixth spot in the PSAC West for the upcoming conference tournament.  The Mountain Cats have won two straight games, including a 71-61 win at Clarion on Saturday.  Makalyn Clapper scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds.  Olivia Fasick scored 14 points and had a game-high nine assists, while Ashley Norling scored 12 points, Peyton Alazaus added 10 points, and Molly Wagoner collected eight points and a game-high 11 boards for Pitt-Johnstown.
      Alazaus ranks second in the PSAC and 39th nationally in 3-pointers made, while Fasick is fifth in the PSAC and 43rd nationally in assists.  In addition, Wagoner is third in the conference and 46th nationally in blocked shots.
      Cal U, under 10th-year Head Coach Jess Strom, enters the game at 16-4 overall and in second-place in the PSAC West at 11-4.  The Vulcans have also made it two straight wins after Saturday's 78-42 victory over Edinboro.  Dejah Terrell had game-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds, and Shawna Harrison chipped-in 16 points for Cal U.
      Cal U leads the PSAC and ranks sixth nationally in turnover margin, 20th in steals per game, and 21st in scoring margin.  Individually, Ciaira Loyd is second in the conference and sixth nationally in assists per game, while Terrell is 12th nationally in blocks per game and 32nd in scoring. 
      The Mountain Cats and Vulcans met in California, Pa. on Feb. 2, and Cal U earned a 56-42 win.  Norling scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Kylah Franklin had six points and six rebounds, and Clapper pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for the Mountain Cats.  The Vulcans were led by Loyd's 16 points and Harrison's double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.
      The Pitt-Johnstown women will be back in action on Feb. 21 when they host a PSAC game against Mercyhurst at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.  Pitt-Johnstown will then close out the regular season with PSAC road games at Seton Hill on Feb. 23 and at IUP on Feb. 26.
 
 
    The Pitt-Johnstown men, under Head Coach Bob Rukavina (33rd-year), is 19-5 overall and one game out of the lead in the PSAC West at 15-3.  The Mountain Cats have won 12 of its last 14 games and are receiving votes in both the NABC (Coaches Poll) and D2SIDA (SID Poll) National Polls.  The Mountain Cats are coming off of a convincing 90-58 win at Clarion on Saturday.  John Paul Kromka's 19 points and six rebounds led four Mountain Cat double figure scorers.  Joe Batt and Ryan Smith each netted 13 points, while Caiden Landis collected 12 points and five rebounds off the bench for Pitt-Johnstown.
    Kromka ranks 15th on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time Scoring List with 1,351 points and sixth on the All-Time Rebounding List, with 684 rebounds. Fred Mulbah, who scored four points and dished out six assists against Clarion on Saturday, enters the game 37 points shy of becoming Pitt-Johnstown 33rd 1,000-point scorer and 13 assists away from tying Nick Novak's (2009-13) Mountain Cat record of 545.
    Pitt-Johnstown leads the PSAC and ranks 11th in NCAA Division II in field goal percentage.  The Mountain Cats are also second in the PSAC and 14th nationally in both assists and assists per game and 34th in assist-to-turnover-ratio.  Kromka leads the country in blocks and is fifth in blocks per game and field goal percentage.  Mulbah paces the PSAC and is second nationally in total assists and fourth in assists per game.
    California (PA) is 16-6 overall and currently fourth in the PSAC West at 11-5 under fourth-year Head Coach Danny Sancomb.  After suffering an 87-79 loss at No. 7 IUP on Wednesday, the Vulcans came back with an 88-62 win against Edinboro on Saturday behind Preston Boswell's 15 points and Zyan Collins' 13 points and 11 rebounds.
    The Vulcans rank second in the PSAC and fifth nationally in rebounds per game.  Cal U is also 24th nationally in field goal percentage defense and 25th in blocks.  Individually, Philip Alston leads the PSAC and ranks 10th nationally in rebounds per game and 17th in scoring.
    The Mountain Cats have won 11 of the last 12 and six straight over the Vulcans, including a 71-70 win in California on Feb. 2.  Jared Jakubick hit a 3-pointer with 2:25 left and Batt made a pair of free-throws that gave the Mountain Cats a lead the lead for good.  Mulbah's 17 points, eight rebounds, and six assists led the Mountain Cats, while Smith (16 points), Kromka (14 points), and Jakubick (11 points) all scored in double for Pitt-Johnstown.  Alston's 21 points and nine rebounds paced four double figure scorers for the Vulcans.
    The Mountain Cat men will host its final regular season game of the 2021-22 season on Wednesday at 7 :00 p.m. when No. 20 Mercyhurst visits the Sports Center for a PSAC match-up.  Pitt-Johnstown will close out the regular season with PSAC games at Seton Hill on Feb. 23 and at Indiana (PA) on Feb. 26, before opening the 2022 PSAC Tournament on Feb. 28.
