John Paul Kromka Named First-Team Academic All-American For Second Straight Season

Kromka_John_Paul.jpg For the third consecutive year, Pitt-Johnstown junior forward John Paul Kromka was named to the First-Team of the 2021-22 Academic All-America® Division II Men's Basketball Team, as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) when this year's teams were released on Tuesday.  Kromka, has a 3.922 GPA in Mechanical Engineering.
 
The Academic All-America Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes basketball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
 
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2021-22 Division II Academic All-America® program.

Kromka becomes a three-time Academic All-American at Pitt-Johnstown.  After being named to the Third-Team as a sophomore in 2019-20, Kromka earned spots on the First-Team in both 2020-21 and 2021-22.
Kromka, a six-time PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week in 2021-22, earned his third straight PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Year honor and his third straight All-PSAC West honor after being named to the second team as a freshman and the first team in both 2019-20 and 2021-22.  The 2018-19 PSAC West Freshman of the Year led Pitt-Johnstown in scoring (17.5 ppg), rebounding (8.1 rpg.), field goal percentage (67.7%), and blocks (88), and was second in assists (87) and third in steals.
 
Kromka, also a Second-Team All-Atlantic Region performer in both 2019-20 and 2021-22 on the court and a First-Team Academic All-American a year ago, leads NCAA Division II in total blocks (88), and leads the PSAC and ranks fourth nationally in blocked shots per game (2.90) and fifth in field goal percentage (67.7%).  He is also 39th in total rebounds with 243.
 
CoSIDA_Academic_All_American_logoOn November 30, the Monroeville, Pa. native and Gateway High School graduate scored 22 points at Malone (OH) to become the Mountain Cats' 32nd 1,000-point scorer.  He currently stands in 11th-place on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time Scoring List with 1,443 points and in fourth-place on All-Time Rebounding List with 732 rebounds.
 
Augustana (S.D.) University's Tyler Riemersma was named the 2021-22 Academic All-American of the Year.  Riemersman, the 2021-22 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division Player of the Year, Riemersma is averaging a double-double, having scored 18.2 points per game and pulled down 11.1 rebounds per content. The native of Bloomington, Minnesota, currently ranks No. 7 in the country in rebounds per game and No. 10 in double-doubles (16). Riemersma, a D2CCA NCAA Division II Men's Basketball All-Central Region first-team honoree, graduated with a degree in data science and currently holds a perfect 4.00 GPA as a graduate student in sport administration Leadership. He scored 20 plus points in eight games this season and has reached double-figure scoring in 19 contests.
 
Five of the 15 members of the Academic All-America® Division II men's basketball teams boast a perfect 4.0 GPA in their undergraduate work or graduate school. The five members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.98, with the entire men's team holding a collective average GPA of 3.83.
 
Eight student-athletes are repeat selection on the Academic All-America® Division II men's basketball team – Harry Cavell (Seattle Pacific University), Trenton Gibson (Tusculum University), Elijah Jenkins (Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University, John Paul Kromka (University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown), Ronnie Silva (Adelphi University), Andrew Sischo (Daemen College), Brendan Sullivan (Colorado School of Mines) and Jared Vitztum (Fort Hayes State University).
