Baseball Suffers Two Losses to Close Out PSAC Series With IUP

Johnstown, PA

Broderick_Dylan.jpgDylan Broderick banged out three hits and belted his fourth homer of the year, and Joey Maun hit a grand slam, but IUP was able to complete a four-game PSAC Western Division sweep over the Mountain Cats with 6-2 and 14-7 victories, Saturday afternoon at Point Stadium.  Pitt-Johnstown is now 15-19-1 overall and 3-13 in the PSAC West.

In game one, Mario Disso led off the bottom of the first with a base hit up the middle and scored on a Broderick triple to center to give Pitt-Johnstown an early lead.

IUP scored a pair of runs in the top of the second to take the lead, then added three more in the third, including Austin Mueller's two run single, to make it 5-1.

In the Mountain Cat third, Josh Ulery followed Jake Ansell's double down the left field line with an RBI double down the right field line to cut it to 5-2.

Mueller's RBI single in the IUP fifth got that run back, and the Crimson Hawks went on to the 6-2 win.

Maun_Joey.jpgUlery went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, and Broderick tripled and drove in one for the Mountain Cats.  Tyler Smith and Jake Ansell also doubled for Pitt-Johnstown.

Ben Briggs slipped to 1-4 after surrendering six runs (4 earned) on eight hits over the first five innings.  Briggs struck out four and walked one.  Seth Coleman held IUP scoreless on two hits over the final two innings.

Mueller had two hits and drove in three for the Crimson Hawks.

IUP's Jimmy Tooley improved to 6-0 after giving up two runs on five hits in five innings.  Eli Glass got the final three out in the seventh to secure his fifth save of the year.

In game two, the Crimson Hawks scored two in the second and five in the third, and got a two-out RBI triple from Torrey roper in the fourth to build an 8-0 lead.

Pitt-Johnstown loaded the bases in its half of the fourth and Maun belted a two-out grand slam over the screen in left to cut the Mountain Cat deficit in half.

After IUP answered with five runs in the top of the fifth, Broderick's long two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the frame got it down to 13-6.

Along with Maun's grand slam, Broderick had two hits, including a two-run home run and Ulery had a base hit and an RBI.

Wil Fetrow dropped to 2-4 after giving up seven runs on six hits in 2.1 innings.

With the series sweep, the Crimson Hawks improved to 19-15 overall and 10-6 in conference-play.

Pitt-Johnstown travels to Shippensburg on Tuesday for a non-conference game, before returning home to begin a four-game, home-and-home PSAC Western Division series against California (PA), Friday afternoon at Point Stadium.
