Mountain Cats Split Doubleheader With Clarion to Start Four-Game PSAC West Series

Johnstown, PA

Ulery_Josh.jpgJosh Ulery banged out four hits and drove in three, and Justin Turcovski hit his third home run of the season to help the Mountain Cats split a doubleheader with Clarion in Saturday's PSAC West series opener at Point Stadium.  Pitt-Johnstown, 11-11-1 overall and 1-5 in conference-play, took the opener, 8-2, but suffered a 3-2 loss in the nightcap.

In game one, Mason Kepler gave Clarion the lead with a solo homer to left-center in the top of the second.

Pitt-Johnstown took the lead with six runs in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by Turcovski's long solo homer off the scoreboard in center field, and Jake Ansell's two-run single to right.

The Golden Eagles got a run back in the top of the sixth on a Danny fox RBI triple to the gap in right-center, but Ulery's two run single in the bottom of the frame plated Alex Glumac and Mario Disso to push the lead out to 8-2.

Turcovski_Justin.jpgUlery was 2-for-4 with a two RBI, while Disso had two hits, an RBI and two runs to lead the Mountain Cats.  Ansell singled and drove in a pair and Turcovski homered.

Rodney Shultz evened his record at 2-2 after limiting Clarion to two runs on six hits over the first six innings.  Shultz struck out six and didn't give up a walk.  Brady Walker pitcher a perfect seventh inning and fanned one.

Mason had two hits, including a solo homer for the Golden Eagles.

Bryce Grenet suffered the loss and dropped to 1-2 after surrendering six runs (5 earned) on five hits in 3.2 innings.

In game two, Turcovski's two-out double followed by Asher Corl's base hit gave the Mountain Cat an early, 1-0 first inning lead.

Clarion tied it in the top of the fourth on a Taylor Squiric wild pitch, and Scott McManamon's RBI single to left in the Golden Eagles' fifth made it 2-1.

Another run in the top of the sixth increased it to 3-1, before the Mountain Cats cut it to 3-2 on Ulery's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh.

However Clarion reliever Joe Rossi was able to get the final out to collect his first save of the season.

Ullery had two hits, including a double, and Josh Reynolds added two hits for Pitt-Johnstown.

Squiric fell to 2-2 after surrendering two runs on seven hits in four innings.  Grayson Hall pitched the final three innings and gave up a run on four hits.

With the split, the Golden Eagles are now 5-16 overall and 2-4 in the PSAC West.

Pitt-Johnstown will conclude the four-game PSAC series against the Golden Eagles with a doubleheader on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Pullman Park in Butler, before hosting a non-conference nine-inning game against Bloomsburg on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Point Stadium.
