
Despite Lualis Alvarado's team-high 17 kills which earned her a spot on the all-tournament team, Pitt-Johnstown could not hang on to a two set to one lead as it fell to the hosts 3-2 in its final match of the Wayne State (MI) University Warrior Invitational in Detroit on Saturday.
Pitt-Johnstown fell 23-25 in the first set before rebounding to secure a 25-22 victory in the second set and a narrow 25-23 victory in the third frame. Wayne State responded with a 12-25 win in the fourth set and closed the match with a 10-15 win in the fifth and deciding set.
The loss dropped the Mountain Cats to 2-5 on the season.
Christen Maloney and Katelyn Courtney had nine and seven kills, respectively, for Pitt-Johnstown. Adiamar Beaz collected a team-high 19 assists and 10 digs. Gabi DeRenzo compiled 20 digs, while Lexi Pendergraft added 11 digs. Mallory Pinske provided three kills, nine digs and four blocks.Â
The Warriors, who received a game-high 31 kills and 13 digs from Lauren VanderWal, improved to 5-2 on the year. Kayla Giroux had 15 kills for Wayne State.

Pitt-Johnstown travels to face West Liberty on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Mountain Cats will participate in the 2022 Seton Hill University Tournament beginning on Sept. 9 at 9:30 a.m. before playing Salem (WV) University in their home opener on Sept. 13 at 6 p.m.
