
Despite Ashley Norling notching her second consecutive double-double, the Pitt-Johnstown women's basketball team suffered a 67-58 setback to California (PA) on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center. The Mountain Cats fell to 12-8 (9-5 PSAC).
Norling racked up a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds and went a perfect 6 of 6 at the free throw line. Hayden Taylor scored 11 points, while Cassidy Crawford added nine for Pitt-Johnstown.
After Cal took a lead as large as 11 late in the opening quarter, Taylor got a fastbreak layup to go with just 17 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 21-12 heading into the second.
Cal's Rajah Fink made a layup at the 7:51 mark of the second to put the Vulcans up 27-16, but the Cats responded over the next three-plus minutes with a 9-1 run that was kickstarted by a layup from Taylor.
Pitt-Johnstown crawled to within three again late in the half thanks to free throws by Norling that made it 35-32. Cal scored a layup on its last possession of the first half to take a 37-32 advantage into the break.
The Mountain Cats shot 53.3% (8 of 15) from the floor in the second and held the Vulcans to just a 35.2% (6 of 17) clip.
Norling hit a jumper with 6:41 left in the third to give the Cats their first lead of the day at 40-39. Olivia Fasick tacked on a pair of free throws to close out a 10-2 run that made it 42-39 less than four minutes into the second half.
Crawford notched a layup with 1:09 remaining in the third to provide the Cats with a one-point lead, but Cal scored the final four points of the quarter to go on top 52-49 heading into the fourth.
Both teams struggled to produce offense throughout the fourth quarter. Cal grabbed control for good with a 7-0 run that spanned nearly five minutes to go in front 61-51 with just 3:20 to play. The Mountain Cats limited the Vulcans to just 2 of 8 from the floor in the fourth, but Cal's 11 of 14 mark from the free throw line made the difference.
Halle Herrington scored a team-high 18 points to pace the Vulcans, who improved to 13-7 (9-5 PSAC).
Pitt-Johnstown has a six-day break before returning to the Sports Center on Saturday to host Clarion for Winterfest Weekend as part of a double-header with the men's team. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
