
Lualis Alvarado terrorized Edinboro to the tune of a season-high 19 kills and the defense collectively strung together another stellar performance as the Mountain Cats claimed a 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-16, 25-19) victory on Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center.
Pitt-Johnstown remained fourth in the PSAC West and improved to 15-7 overall (6-4 PSAC). The Fighting Scots dropped to 10-10 overall (5-5 PSAC).
Mallory Pinske racked up 13 kills to pair with a career-high eight total blocks, while Brooke Pelloni provided eight kills and three blocks.
Adiamar Beaz collected a match-high 46 assists, one short of a season-high, and had 13 digs. Gabi DeRenzo was again one of the main catalysts defensively, recording a match-high 37 digs.
The turning point in the match came in the third set when the Mountain Cats asserted themselves with several lengthy runs to gain control.
After an attack error gave Edinboro a 12-5 advantage, Pinske hammered down a kill to spark a 7-0 rally that tied the set at 12-all. The Scots went up by two, but again Pinske delivered a kill that was the start of a 6-0 run that made it 18-14.Â
Another Pinske kill followed by back-to-back kills by Alvarado was part of another 6-0 rally that gave the Mountain Cats a 24-15 advantage before Katelyn Courtney pounded a kill to close the set.
Alvarado sparked a 4-0 spurt in the fourth frame that extended the Mountain Cats' lead to 11-6 early on. Five straight attack errors from the Scots helped Pitt-Johnstown go on a 9-1 run that made it 22-11, effectively ending any chance of an Edinboro comeback.
The opening set went back-and-forth in the early stages, but the Mountain Cats seized control for good with a 5-0 spurt capped by a kill from Natalie Lippincott to go on top 18-14. Alvarado appropriately gave her team a 1-0 lead after sealing the set with a kill.
Pitt-Johnstown travels to Shippensburg for a crossover matchup on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
