Pitt-Johnstown had the unenviable task of playing twice in one day, and it showed early on in the restart of a game at Edinboro from Sept. 23 that was stopped because of a medical emergency inside the arena.
The Fighting Scots used the stoppage to their advantage, rallying to tie the match at 2-all before the Mountain Cats slammed the door in the fifth set to capture a 3-2 victory (25-14, 25-22, 13-25, 17-25, 15-11) on Saturday afternoon.
Already up 3-1 in the final frame, a kill apiece by Mallory Pinske, Natalie Lippincott and Brooke Pelloni extended the lead to 6-1. The momentum from that enabled the lead to grow to seven when Lualis Alvardo pounded down a kill to make it 11-4.
Although Edinboro cut it to 13-11, freshman Dannika Susko's kill paired with a bad set by the Fighting Scots brought the match to a satisfying close.
Susko racked up a team-high 14 kills, while Pelloni provided 11. Alvarado had a double-double with 13 digs and 10 kills to pair with two blocks. Adiamar Beaz passed out a match-high 46 and recorded 16 digs.
The Mountain Cats ripped off two straight set wins to open the match on the strength of a prolific offensive start.
Pinske hammered out a kill to make it 10-5 early in the opening set. A kill from Edinboro was followed by five straight points capped by a kill from Susko to up the lead to 15-6.
A pair of kills by Pelloni and another by Alvarado was part of a 4-0 spurt that put the Mountain Cats in front 22-11, all but sealing the set from there.
The situation flip-flopped in the second set when Makayla Neelands put Edinboro up 10-5 with a kill. The Fighting Scots went up 13-5 before the Mountain Cats went to work.
An attack error put Edinboro ahead 19-16 before Pitt-Johnstown answered with four of the next five points to tie the set at 20-all on a clutch kill from Pinske. With the set tied at 22-all, the Mountain Cats rose to the occasion with three straight points—a kill by Lippincott was followed by an attack error before Pelloni notched the set-winner with a kill.
The third set restarted with Edinboro up 14-9. It made for an interesting finish after the Fighting Scots went on to claim the set and take the fourth frame to push the Mountain Cats to the brink.
