Pitt-Johnson received a match-high 14 kills from Lu Alvarado to spark an efficient three-set sweep over Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon inside the Sports Center.
Seniors Katelyn Courtney and Lexi Pendergraft were honored pregame in recognition of Senior Day, and both had a hand in helping the Mountain Cats move to 18-9 overall (8-6 PSAC West). Courtney supplied a season-high five kills, while Pendergraft provided a season-high 10 digs.
Behind a stingy defense that held the Lakers to just 25 kills on 102 attempts, the Mountain Cats swept the season series.
Natalie Lippincott tallied eight kills, and Brooke Pelloni chipped in six. Gabi DeRenzo had a match-high 20 digs. Adiamar Beaz racked up 30 assists and two service aces.
The first set was never really close after Pitt-Johnstown began to separate itself with back-to-back kills from Alvarado and Courtney to go up 17-10.
A kill by Alvarado and a service ace from Jessica Krug helped seal the opening set.
The Mountain Cats never trailed in the second set despite the Lakers clawing within a point at 7-6 early on. A 7-2 spurt that ended with an ace from Krug extended the lead to 14-8. Following a Merychurst timeout, Pitt-Johnstown kept the pressure on and strung together a 9-3 rally to go up 23-11 and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Pitt-Johnstown wraps up the regular season with visits to Cal (PA) next Friday and a trip to Slippery Rock on Saturday.
