
Junior guard Peyton Alazaus scored a game-high 22 points and racked up three rebounds and three assists to power Pitt-Johnstown past Edinboro 80-53 on what was Senior Day on Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center. The Mountain Cats upped their record to 15-11 (12-8 PSAC West).
Before the game, seniors Ashley Norling and Makalyn Clapper were recognized for their four years of dedication to the program.
Norling, a native of Pittsburgh, PA, recorded a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. She also dished out eight assists and shot 4 of 8 from the field and was a perfect 8 of 8 from the free throw line. Clapper, who is from Gallitzin, PA, snatched seven rebounds and totaled five points.Â
Hayden Taylor drilled three 3-pointers and finished with 17 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the field. Olivia Fasick delivered eight assists and chipped in seven points.
The Mountain Cats turned what was a tight contest through three quarters into a rout by outscoring the Scots 29-8 in the fourth quarter. Nearly all of the damage was done over the final seven minutes.
After Edinboro cut Pitt-Johnstown's lead to five with 7:07 remaining, the Mountain Cats went on a 19-0 run over the next five minutes that was capped off by two free throws from Norling. Alazaus hit a three and had a conventional three-point play as she led the way with 10 points during the game-defining run.
Pitt-Johnstown shot 71.4% (10 of 14) from the floor, which included a 4 for 5 performance from beyond the arc, in the fourth. Meanwhile on the defensive end, it limited Edinboro to just a 12.5% (2 of 16) shooting clip in the final period.
Edinboro hit a layup as the buzzer sounded to end the first with the game tied at 18-all. The Mountain Cats went up by as many as eight in the second when Taylor hit a three to make it 28-20 with 6:15 left. Pitt-Johnstown held a slim 34-33 lead at the break.
Bella Burrelli scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed four rebounds to pace Edinboro, which slipped to 15-10 (12-8 PSAC West).
The Mountain Cats, who are tied with Edinboro and California (PA) for third place in the PSAC Western Division, host the Vulcans in their regular season home finale on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. Pitt-Johnstown closes the regular season with a trip to Slippery Rock slated for next Saturday at 1 p.m.
