Miehl Homers, Smith Fans 11, But Gannon Takes Pair of PSAC West Games From Mountain Cats

Johnstown, PA

Kayla Miehl belted a three-run homer run in the opener and Mia Smith struck out 11 in the nightcap, but Gannon took advantage of five homers of its own to secure a PSAC West softball sweep over Pitt-Johnstown (7-13, 2-6 PSAC West), Wednesday afternoon at V.E. Erickson Complex.  The Golden Knights took the opener, 11-3 in five innings before completing the sweep with a 9-1 victory in the nightcap.

In game one, Abbey Girman connected for a three-run homer in the top of the first inning to give Gannon the early lead.

That lead didn't last long because Miehl quickly knotted it at three with a long homer to left in the Pitt-Johnstown half of the first.

Natalia Mallozzi's two run homer in the top of the second gave the lead back to the Golden Knights, before Gannon added five more in the fourth, including Girman's second home run of the day, to increase the lead to 10-3.

A run in the top of the fifth make it 11-3 and the Golden Knights went on to the five-inning victory.

Miehl had the three-tun homer for the Mountain Cats, while Tori Radvan doubled, and Emilia Santiago, Julia Mooney, and Maddie Flowers all had hits.

Radvan suffered the loss and dropped to 2-5 after surrendering 10 runs, but just six earned, on eight hits over the first 3.2 innings.  Julie Shinavski tossed the final 1.1 innings and gave up a run on three hits.

In game two, the Mountain Cats scratched out a run in the bottom of the first.  Santiago led off with a base hit to right, worked her way to third, and scored on Mooney's RBI ground out.

It stayed that way until the top of the fourth when Girman's sacrifice fly tied it at one, and Katie Sidare's lead-off homer to left in the Golden Knights' half of the fifth put Gannon on top, 2-1.

Gannon added five more runs in the top of the sixth, and two more in the seventh on Lauryn Rougeux's home run.

Mooney had an RBI, while Laura Fox, Jenna Tallman, Santiago, and Radvan all had hits for the Mountain Cats.

Smith slipped to 5-4 after allowing nine runs on 11 hits.  Smith's 11 strikeouts were one shy of her career-high of 12.

Gannon is now 7-13 overall and 6-2 in confernce-play.
