Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Celebrates Senior Day, But Suffers Pair of Conference Losses to IUP

Johnstown, PA

Julia Mooney and Kayla Miehl each homered and drove in two in the opener, and Tori Radvan had three doubles and a career-high six RBI in game two, but Indiana (PA) swept a PSAC West softball doubleheader from Pitt-Johnstown, 6-5 and 11-7, Thursday afternoon at Richland Elementary School.  The Mountain Cats are now 13-29 overall and 8-22 in conference-play.

Between games of the doubleheader, Head Coach Niki Cognigni-Pecora and the Pitt-Johnstown softball program recognized seniors Maddie Flowers and Laura Fox.

In game one, IUP scored a pair of runs in the top of the first off of Mountain Cat starter Tori Radvan, but back-to-back solo homer runs from Jenna Tallman and Mooney in the bottom of the first quickly tied it.

Pitt-Johnstown added three more in the third.  Mooney's base hit up the middle scored Fox from third, and Miehl followed with a two-run homer to left to give the Mountain cats a 5-2 advantage.

The Crimson Hawks responded with three runs of their own in the top of the fourth, including Sara Taliford's two-run triple, to knot it at five.

Another run in the top of the fifth gave the lead back to IUP, before the Crimson Hawks used a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to make it 7-5.

Miehl and Mooney each went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI and Tallman added a solo homer for the Mountain Cats.  Pitt-Johnstown also got hits from Radvan and Flowers.

Radvan suffered the loss and dropped to 4-12 after surrendering seven runs (6 earned) on 11 hits in seven innings.  Radvan also struck out and walked three.

In the nightcap, Radvan's two-out, double to center chased home Tallman and Mooney to give Pitt-Johnstown 1 2-0 lead after one inning.

Jordan Sylvai's solo homer to right in the top of the second cut it to 2-1, before the Crimson Hawks added three more in the third to go in front, 4-2.

Six more from IUP in the top of fourth and one in the fifth made it 11-2, but an RBI double from Mooney and a two-run double from Radvan cut the Mountain Cats' deficit to 11-5.

Another two-run double from Radvan in the bottom of the sixth gave Pitt-Johnstown two more runs and narrowed it to 11-7, but that was as close as it would get.

Radvan went 3-for-4 with three doubles and a career-high six RBI, while Flowers had two hits and scored two runs, and Miehl had two hits and scored a run for Pitt-Johnstown.  Mooney doubled home a run and Santiago had a base hit.

Mia Smith slipped to 9-11 after giving up 10 runs, but just six earned on eight hits, over the first four innings.  Miehl pitched the final three innings and held the Crimson Hawks to one run on two hits.

With the sweep, IUP improved to 26-21 overall and 17-13 in the PSAC West.

Pitt-Johnstown is scheduled to close out the 2023 season with a PSAC West doubleheader on Saturday at a place and time to be determined.
