Seth Shuey threw a complete-game shutout to lead Pitt-Johnstown to a 1-0 PSAC West over Clarion in Saturday's doubleheader opener in Clarion. The Golden Eagles came back with a 3-0 win in game two. The Mountain Cats took three-of-the-four games in the weekend series and are now 12-18 overall and 5-7 in conference-play.
In game one,
Asher Corl's two out RBI single to center chased home
Devon Boyles, who led off the inning with a walk, to give Pitt-Johnstown an early 1-0 lead.
That's all Shuey would need. Shuey, who fanned the side in the seventh, tossed a complete-game, five-hit, shutout to pick up his first win of the season. Shuey fanned nine and didn't allow a walk.
Along with Corl's RBI single,
Dylan Broderick,
Erik Rhodes,
Josh Ulery, and Boyles all had hits for Pitt-Johnstown.
Scott McManamon and Sam Felner each had a pair of hits for Clarion.
In game two, Daren Byers' sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first gave the Golden Eagles a quick lead, before Caden Contant's two-run single in the second made it 3-0.
After, Clarion added another run in the fourth, Pitt-Johnstown answered with two in the top of the fifth.
Jake Ansell doubled to lead off and scored on Ulery's base hit, and Rhodes was able to score on a Clarion error to cut it to 4-2, but that was as close as the Mountain Cats would get.
Ulery went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Pitt-Johnstown.
Ben Tomb suffered the loss and fell to 2-3 after surrendering three runs on five hits over the first three innings. Tomb struck out four and walked four.
With the split, the Golden Eagles are now 8-22 overall and 2-10 in the PSAC West.
Pitt-Johnstown will host a non-conference doubleheader against Bloomsburg, Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Point Stadium, before playing a four-game PSAC Western Division series against Mercyhurst next weekend. The Mountain Cats will open the series on Friday in Erie, before completing with a pair of games in Johnstown on Saturday.
