Mountain Cats conquer Cal (Pa.) in three-set sweep

California, Pa.

Alvarado, LualisPinske, MalloryLualis Alvarado racked up a match-high 12 kills to pair well with Mallory Pinske's 10 kills and two blocks as Pitt-Johnstown went on the road to clamp California (Pa.) for a three-set sweep on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

The Mountain Cats moved to 15-3 overall (3-2 PSAC West) behind a .233 hitting percentage that led to an efficient 25-15, 25-21, 27-25 victory.

Dannika Susko compiled nine kills on just 17 attempts for a .412 hitting percentage. Natalie Lippincott added seven kills. Adiamar Beaz passed out a match-high 37 assists. Gabriella DeRenzo chalked up a match-high 14 digs.

A sweep was momentarily in doubt when Pitt-Johnstown found itself down 24-19 in the third set, but five straight points headlined by two kills from Lippincott knotted it at 24-all.  The Vulcans took a 25-24 lead thanks to a kill from Elisa Rugiero, but the Mountain Cats earned the final three points, including Pinske's match-ending kill.

A 5-0 run in the opening set that was ignited by an Ellie Zuro kill gave the Mountain Cats a 15-9 lead. They never looked back from there as two kills apiece from Alvarado and Lippincott accounted for the final four points in a tone-setting first set.

Sophia Johnson and Allie Droneberger had seven kills apiece to pace the Vulcans, who dropped to 3-12 (0-6 PSAC West).

Pitt-Johnstown will visit IUP on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
