Lamesta, Mountain Cats blank Edinboro in crucial Senior Day victory

Johnstown, Pa.

Lamesta, SophiaNeidig, HaleyPitt-Johnstown applied pressure early to the tune of two first half goals and never let up on its way to celebrating Senior Day with a significant 3-0 victory over Edinboro on Saturday afternoon at Richland High School.

Sophia Lamesta found the back of the net twice on penalty kicks, including a connection in the seventh minute that gave the Mountain Cats the lead for good.

She was one of eight seniors along with Haley Neidig, Lydia Roman, MacKenzie Stephens, Abby Jackson, Judith Gaelle Dule, Katelyn Rudy and Maura Carey who were honored pregame for their commitment to the program.

The Mountain Cats improved to 7-5-2 overall (5-5-2 PSAC) and jumped Edinboro in the battle for the No. 4 seed in the PSAC West standings with just two matches remaining in the regular-season. They're only one win shy of tying the record of six conference wins in a single-season that was set in 2019.

Neidig extended the Mountain Cats' lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute thanks to assists from freshman Delaney McGrath and Roman. That same score held up heading into halftime.

Pitt-Johnstown junior goalkeeper Emma Morin racked up five saves and secured her sixth shutout of the season. Meanwhile, Lamesta continued to pepper Edinboro goalkeeper Sandra Malave with a match-high four shots on goal and executed on her second successful penalty kick in the 87th minute.

McGrath, who played all 90 minutes for just the second time in her career, and fellow freshman Nicole Hawk each picked up a shot on goal for Pitt-Johnstown, which had seven total. Edinboro dropped to 5-5-3 overall (5-5-1 PSAC) with three matches left in its regular-season.

The Mountain Cats will visit California (Pa.) on Nov. 6 for a 6 p.m. matchup.
