Pitt-Johnstown could not find enough offense to keep pace with American International (MA) in a shortened 11-1 defeat in the first of two spring games on Friday morning. The Mountain Cats dropped to 3-8 on the year with just one spring game left to play.
Sophomore Mia Smith suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs on two hits and six walks. Mahlon Yonkin threw four innings and gave up six runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Addison Hilligsberg closed out the game in the circle.
Freshman Meghan McDonough had a hit, drew a walk and scored the lone run. Yonkin, Shaylin Hagerman, Julia Mooney and Tori Radvan all recorded base hits for the Mountain Cats.
The Yellow Jackets capitalized on six walks and a pair of singles in the top of the first to go on top 5-0 and seize control.
McDonough, Hagerman and Mooney all had singles to lead off the bottom of the frame and load the bases. One batter later, Ailah Charles reached on a fielder's choice to score McDonough and make it 5-1.
American International scored two runs apiece in the second, third and fifth innings to close out the game.
The Mountain Cats will have three days to prepare for the start of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play when they open up with a doubleheader at California (Pa.) on Tuesday starting at 2 p.m.
