Mountain Cats secure pair of victories to open series at West Liberty

Beckley, W.Va.

Pitt-Johnstown roared back from an early deficit to roll to a 15-4 victory in game one and then staved off West Liberty for a 7-4 win in game two to sweep a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Kovalick Field.

The Mountain Cats pounded out 23 total hits and committed just one error in two games to move to 3-5 on the season.

After surrendering three runs in the bottom of the first in game one, sophomore Ben Tomb settled in and picked up the win. He allowed four runs on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks across 4.1 innings.

Six different players had at least two hits for the Mountain Cats. Alex Glumac and Erik Rhodes both reached base four times, recorded three hits and scored a pair of runs.  Justin Turcovski doubled twice and had three runs scored. Josh Ulery also slapped two doubles and scored twice.

Trailing 3-2 entering the fourth, Pitt-Johnstown posted four runs on three hits and benefitted from a West Liberty fielding error to take control for good.

The Mountain Cats then put the exclamation point on in the fifth with six more runs, their most in an inning so far this season.

Turcovski doubled, Rhodes walked and Glumac singled to load the bases for Aidan Steinbugl, who brought them all around with a clutch three-run triple to make it 9-3 and break the game wide open.

Steinbugl reached base safely three times and drove in four runs on two hits, including a solo home run with one out in the first. Ulery doubled him in and then scored one batter later on Devon Boyles' sacrifice fly. Alex Ebeling walked and Zachary Ramach drove him in with a triple to cap the inning.

Pitt-Johnstown worked eight walks and never trailed in game two after Reynolds doubled in Turcovski, who walked with one out in the second inning.

Austin Hammerle was dominant on the mound, throwing five innings and giving up just one run on four hits to pair with 10 strikeouts and no walks. Garret Holzapfel and Zach Myers each gave up a run in relief.

The real turning point came an inning later when the Mountain Cats scored three runs on just one hit. Glumac and Steinbugl both walked with one out before Ulery singled in Glumac to make it 2-0.

Boyles reached on a throwing error to allow Steinbugl to score and Turcovski's sacrifice fly brought home Ulery to polish off the inning.

The Hilltoppers scored a single run in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, but they were largely canceled out when the Mountain Cats notched a pair of runs in the sixth on three hits. Glumac had a pair of hits and drove in a run. Brody Roberts supplied two hits, an RBI and scored once.

The Mountain Cats will finish up their four-game series at West Liberty on Sunday. They'll open a three-game series at Charleston (WV) with a doubleheader that starts at 4 p.m. next Saturday.
