Mountain Cats turned aside by Edinboro in doubleheader

Johnstown, PA

Despite nearly bouncing back from a four-run deficit in game one, Pitt-Johnstown was handed a 9-8 setback before being subjected to an 11-4 defeat in the second game of a PSAC West doubleheader opposite of Edinboro on Sunday afternoon.

The Mountain Cats sit at 6-20 overall behind a 3-11 mark in the conference. The Fighting Scots improved to 7-17 and 4-8 in the PSAC West.

It was far from an ideal beginning after Edinboro notched three runs in its half of the second. The Mountain Cats started to claw back with a pair of runs in the third thanks to Jenna Tallman's two-run home run.

The Scots eventually led by as many as five at 9-4 after scoring three runs on three hits in the sixth. But that was short-lived when Meghan McDonough and Julia Mooney began the Mountain Cats' sixth with back-to-back singles.

Kayla Miehl scored McDonough on a sacrifice fly, and after a groundout, pinch-runner Emma DiStefano came around to score after Audrey Paterson reached on an error with two outs. The inning continued when Sydney Mitchell singled and Shaylin Hagerman walked to load the bases. Hannah Gnibus' two-RBI single closed the deficit to one.

Mooney was hit by a pitch in the seventh, moved to second on a passed ball and advanced to third on Miehl's single. But the game ended two batters later after the Scots turned a double play on Audrey Paterson's liner to the outfield.

Freshman Mahlon Yonkin was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits in three innings of work. Julie Shinavski and Addison Hilligsberg each tossed two innings of relief, while combining to allow six runs, two earned, on eight hits.

Much like the opener, the Scots set the tone with three runs in the top of the first to take a lead they would never let fade away.

It was 4-0 before the Mountain Cats scratched the scoreboard in the second thanks to a leadoff double from Miehl and an RBI single two batters later from Brynnae Coe.

Mooney led off the fourth with a solo home run that made it 5-2. Miehl and Tallman worked back-to-back walks and Coe once again paid that off with an RBI single to tighten it to 5-3.

Edinboro scored the next six runs to go on top 11-3 and coast from there. Lauren Bush threw all seven innings to pick up the win. Mia Smith suffered the loss after tossing six innings with nine strikeouts and six walks.

The Mountain Cats will visit the Scots on Monday to wrap up the season-series with a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
