Mountain Cats struck down by Slippery Rock in doubleheader

Slippery Rock, PA

Pitt-Johnstown never found the right combination of buttons to press against Slippery Rock in a 9-1 setback that was immediately followed with a 9-0 defeat in the second game of a conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

The Mountain Cats were restricted to just three hits over the two games and fell to 6-28 overall and 3-19 in the PSAC West. The Rock improved to 20-22 overall backed up by a 13-10 mark in the conference.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie after three complete innings in the opener before the Mountain Cats struck first in the fourth. Kayla Miehl was hit by a pitch and Sydney Mitchell came on as the pinch-runner, moved to second on a wild pitch and eventually scored on Isabella DePalma's RBI double.

But that advantage quickly evaporated in the bottom of the fifth when the Rock registered seven hits, including three home runs, and posted eight runs off starter Julie Shinavski. A run on two hits in the sixth brought the game to a close.

Shinavski was tagged with the loss after tossing 4.2 innings with two strikeouts and a walk.

It didn't get any easier for the Mountain Cats when they had to go up against Slippery Rock starter Kelsi Anderson. She picked up the win in both games, including a game two win where she threw three scoreless innings and gave up just one hit.

Miehl's leadoff single in the top of the second was the lone hit. Mia Smith was charged with the loss in the circle.

Four runs in each of the second and third innings was more than enough for Slippery Rock to seize control in a shortened affair.

Pitt-Johnstown will host Slippery Rock for a doubleheader to conclude the season-series on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
