Pitt-Johnstown received an early jolt with a three-run first inning but was outscored 12-1 over the next five to drop a 12-4 decision in game one. The Mountain Cats were much more up to the challenge in game two but couldn't scratch enough runs across in a 2-1 defeat to wrap up a PSAC West doubleheader on Thursday afternoon.
The Mountain Cats slipped to 7-31 overall with a 4-22 conference record. The Golden Eagles moved to 14-30 overall and 9-19 in the conference.
Tori Radvan led off the first with a crisp single. Julia Mooney was hit by a pitch with one out, and with two outs, Jenna Tallman cracked a three-run home run that briefly put the Mountain Cats on top.
The Golden Eagles responded with four runs on four hits in their half of the second and then posted a five-run third to push the lead to 9-3.
After two more runs with the help of an error in the fourth, Clarion went up 11-3. Mooney smacked a one-out double and moved to third on a passed ball. Kayla Miehl extended the game by an extra inning with an RBI double to deep center field.
Senior hurler Julie Shinavski tossed three innings and was charged with the loss in the circle. Addison Hilligsberg surrendered a run in 2.2 innings of relief. Emma Hipps allowed four earned runs on six hits in five innings to pick up the win for Clarion.
The Mountain Cats never went away in the second game despite collecting just four hits. Clarion notched its first run with the assistance of an error in the third inning. The Golden Eagles received back-to-back singles to start the fourth and scored another unearned run to make it 2-0.
Radvan's leadoff double in the sixth put the Mountain Cats in business. Pinch-runner Krista Brunson then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Sydney Mitchell before eventually crossing home on Miehl's RBI single that trimmed it to 2-1.
But that would be all the closer they would get as Mia Smith was tagged with the loss in the circle despite an admirable complete-game effort. She gave up just two unearned runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts compared to just one walk.
Tallman and Shaylin Hagerman also added singles for the Mountain Cats.
