Mountain Cats turned away in doubleheader by Seton Hill

Greensburg, PA

Pitt-Johnstown couldn't overcome an unfortunate fourth inning in a 6-2 loss in game one before suffering a 5-4 defeat in extra innings against Seton Hill in a PSAC West Division doubleheader on Sunday afternoon in Greensburg.

The Mountain Cats slipped to 13-17 with a 4-8 mark in the conference. The Griffins swept the season series to move to 21-9 and 8-4 in the division.

Each team did its damage in the fourth inning of the opener. Josh Ulery's one-out single helped ignite a rally that gave Pitt-Johnstown a brief advantage. Devon Boyles was hit by a pitch, and Justin Turcovski smacked an opposite-field single to score Ulery and make it 1-0. Alex Ebeling, who had two of the four hits for the Mountain Cats, followed with another RBI single that pushed it to 2-0.

Unfortunately, it was all the runs the Mountain Cats could muster. The Griffins responded by sending 10 hitters to the plate and stringing together six runs on five hits, including four straight to begin the frame.

Starter Seth Shuey took the loss after tossing three-plus innings and giving up five earned runs on seven hits. Austin Hammerle struck out two in two innings of scoreless relief, and Garret Holzapfel threw a scoreless sixth.

The second contest was flipped on its head when the Mountain Cats notched a pair of runs to tie the game at 3-3 and send it into extras. Seth Helgert singled to start the comeback and ventured all the way to third on Ebeling's base-hit. Ulery's RBI groundout made it a one-run game with two outs before Boyles' clutch single to left-field evened the score.

Erik Rhodes tossed a scoreless seventh and then led off the eighth by getting hit by a pitch to help the Mountain Cats grab the lead for the first time. He moved to second after Turcovski drew a walk, reached third on a bunt single by Zach Ramach and finally scored on Alex Glumac's sacrifice fly to left.

But the Griffins once again had the answer as they worked three consecutive walks before scoring the equalizer on a sacrifice fly by Owen Sabol. Owen Mandler followed and brought the game to an end with his walk-off pinch-hit single. Rhodes was charged with the loss in relief for the Mountain Cats.

Pitt-Johnstown hosts Shippensburg in a non-divisional contest on Tuesday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. from Point Stadium.
