Pitt-Johnstown delivered in the clutch time and time again in an efficient 3-0 sweep over Slippery Rock in a PSAC West matchup on Saturday afternoon at the Sports Center.
The Mountain Cats improved to 13-6 (4-3 PSAC) behind another stellar effort from Ellie Zuro Cirino, who racked up a match-high 18 kills and four blocks.
Caroline Knight provided seven kills, 14 digs and a match-high four service aces. Dannika Susko had seven kills, while Natalie Lippincott contributed six kills and seven digs. Journey Welling was once again a force at the net with a team-high five blocks.
Abby Berry directed the offense to the tune of a match-high 38 assists, and Jessica Krug compiled a match-high 22 digs.
Pitt-Johnstown staged multiple comebacks late in the opening set. Down 20-18, Lippincott and back-to-back attack errors gave the Mountain Cats a one-point edge. Tied at 21-all, Susko recorded back-to-back kills before an ace by Knight secured a match-point.
With the set tied at 24-all, Zuro swatted two kills during a 3-1 rally that lifted Pitt-Johnstown to a 1-0 lead.
The Mountain Cats went up by as many as five in the second set when Knight detonated on a ball to make it 20-15. They maintained a lead of at least two the rest of the way before an attack error and two emphatic kills from Zuro sealed the set and a 2-0 advantage.
Neither team led by more than two early on in the third set until three attack errors propelled the Mountain Cats to a 5-0 run to take an 11-7 lead. But later when they were down 18-16, Lippincott notched a kill to begin a 5-1 flurry that gave the Mountain Cats a 21-19Â edge.
Susko and Zuro each had kills and Krug tallied an ace during a 4-1 run that helped put the Rock away.
Lauren VonderHaar had a team-high eight kills for Slippery Rock, which dropped to 9-11 (2-5 PSAC).
Pitt-Johnstown will visit IUP at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24.
