JOHNSTOWN, Pa. — Five different players reached double-figures as Pitt-Johnstown pulled away from D'Youville in the second half for an 85-72 non-conference win on Saturday night at the Sports Center.
The Mountain Cats moved to 2-1 on the year behind a game-high 20 points from junior guard Vinnie Cugini, who shot 8-for-12 from the field and grabbed four rebounds.
Freshman Cedric Rault hit 8-of-9 from the field and finished with 18 points, a game-high six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Baden Forup notched his first double-double of the season with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Jay Rose contributed 12 points off the bench, while Will Kromka chipped in 11 points.
Pitt-Johnstown led by only four with less than 14 minutes to play before Rault scored inside to kickstart a game-changing 10-0 run that extended it to 63-49. That run took only two minutes and afforded the Mountain Cats the breathing room they needed down the stretch.
Their lead was cut to five on two separate occasions over the final eight minutes, including once in the final 90 seconds. Nick Watts, however, notched a critical and-one with 59 seconds left to push the lead back up to eight before Cugini went 2-for-2 at the line just 13 seconds later to seal it.
The Mountain Cats were ultra-efficient in both halves, finishing 57.4% (35-of-61) from the field and 81.3% from the free-throw line. Pitt-Johnstown racked up a significant 62-28 edge in points in the paint and a 25-17 advantage in points off turnovers.
After Adam Bilinsky went 1-for-2 at the free-throw line to help Pitt-Johnstown grab a 10-2 lead to open the game, it was a back-and-forth affair throughout the first 20 minutes. The Mountain Cats built a nine-point advantage when Rault scored inside with about 12 minutes remaining. They went into the locker room up 40-36.
Trayton Trice scored a team-high 18 points for D'Youville, which dropped to 0-3.
Pitt-Johnstown will take on Ashland at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Sports Center.
