Mountain Cats drop a pair to West Liberty

Canton, Ohio

LeGars, ZacPitt-Johnstown was tripped up in a doubleheader by West Liberty, falling in game one 6-5 before suffering a 13-6 setback in the second game on Saturday afternoon in Canton, Ohio's Thurman Munson Stadium.

The Mountain Cats fell to 1-6.

Four hits through three innings in the opener did not yield any runs for the Mountain Cats as they slipped into a 2-0 hole.

Erik Rhodes singled to lead off the fourth, advanced on a passed ball and stole third, all with nobody out. Nathan Helms, who had two hits and two RBIs, brought Rhodes in with a groundout to cut the deficit in half.

After going down 3-1, the Mountain Cats bounced back with four runs on four hits in their half of the fifth to go on top. Alex Ebeling singled to lead off, Justin Turcovski was hit by a pitch and Devon Boyles singled to set up a bases-clearing double from Calvin Iseminger. Helms then singled home Iseminger to cap the scoring and make it a 5-3 game.

After neither team breached the scoreboard in the sixth, the Hilltoppers walked it off in their half of the seventh with three unearned runs off Cole Sansom, who walked two and struck out one in 1.1 innings pitched.

Aiden Coleman started and threw five innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on six hits with four strikeouts.

In game two, the Mountain Cats found themselves down seven after a half inning and never recovered.

Zac LeGars recorded four of the Mountain Cats' eight hits, including a solo home run to lead off the fifth. He led off the bottom of the first with a single and moved to third on a single by Turcovski. An RBI groundout courtesy of Boyles made it 7-1.

But three more runs from the Hilltoppers gave them a 10-1 advantage and the ability to coast from that point.

Flinn McClain suffered the loss on the mound for the Mountain Cats after giving up eight hits in 2.2 innings of work.

Rhodes, Karson Reffner, Joey Maun, Logan Ferguson all added base hits for Pitt-Johnstown. Zach Slis and Zyler Freedman surrendered five unearned runs across 4.1 combined  innings in relief.

Pending weather, Pitt-Johnstown will close out a four-game weekend series with two games against Malone on Sunday, with game one beginning at noon.
