Pitt-Johnstown could not overcome a solid pitching performance from Staten Island in a 7-0 setback in the second game of the team's annual Florida trip on Sunday afternoon at Legends Way Complex.
The Mountain Cats dropped to 0-2. Mia Smith threw a complete game, but took the loss after giving up seven runs, three earned, on 10 hits with six strikeouts compared to three walks.
Staten Island picked up an unearned run on two hits and the first inning and added insurance in the third, fifth and seventh innings to seal it.
Jenna Tallman and Gianna Surra each recorded base hits in the bottom of the second, but both were left stranded.
Sara Solberg and Tallman each singled to lead off the third and fourth innings, respectively, but the Mountain Cats did not breach the scoreboard.
They threatened again in the fifth after Meghan McDonough walked with one out and Brynnae Coe followed with a single. However, a flyout and a strikeout put an end to the inning.
The Mountain Cats will play a doubleheader on Monday against the University of Mary (ND) and Southwest Minnesota State. Game one begins at 9 a.m., with game two to follow at 11:15 a.m.
