Jenna Tallman went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, but West Virginia Wesleyan opened up a five run first inning advantage and held off Pitt-Johnstown, 5-3, Thursday afternoon at the Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. The Mountain Cats are now 1-7.
West Virginia Wesleyan raced out to a 5-0 lead on two-out, two-run singles from Kendall Stoffel and Madison Austra, before Lyndzee Hague was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Mountain Cats answered with two runs in the top of the second. Following a
Krista Brunson walk and a
Brynnae Coe base hit,
Isabella DePalma delivered an RBI single to left, and
Sara Solberg drove home Coe with a single to center to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Pitt-Johnstown got another run back in the fifth. With two outs, Tallman doubled to right,
Emma DiStefano entered as a pinch runner, and came around to score on
Julia Mooney's double to center.

However, that was as close as the Mountain Cats could get.
Along with Tallman's doubles, Mooney doubled and drove in one, DePalma and Solberg each had RBI singles, and
Hannah Gnibus and Coe had one hit apiece.
After the rough first inning, Pitt-Johnstown starter
Mia Smith settled down and held the Bobcats scoreless over the next three innings, but took the loss and fell to 1-3. Smith allowed five runs on six hits, while striking out two and walking six.
Mahlon Yonkin pitched two scoreless innings in relief, surrendering just two hits and fanning one.
Stoffel had two hits and drove in two, Hague collected two hits and an RBI, and Austra had a hit and two RBI for West Virginia Wesleyan, now 3-13.
Stoffel also got the start in the circle for the Bobcats and improved to 2-3 after tossing the first six innings. Stoffel gave up three runs on seven hits, struck out seven and walked one. Kelsi Brown pitched a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout to record her first save of the season.
Pitt-Johnstown will finish the Spring Games against Point Park and Lynn (FL) on Friday, then travel to Charleston (WV) for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday.
