Softball Drops Two Tight PSAC West Games at Clarion

Gnibus, HannahSurra, GiannaAfter suffering a 7-4 loss in game one of Thursday's PSAC West doubleheader at Clarion, Pitt-Johnstown erased a five-run deficit to take tie it at six, but the Golden Eagles answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh to sweep the Mountain Cats, 7-6, in the nightcap.
 
In game one, Pitt-Johnstown, 6-26 overall and 3-15 in the conference, put runners on first and second in the top of the third on base hits from Hannah Gnibus and Meghan McDonough.  Brynnae Coe's sacrifice bunt moved the runners up a base and Isabella DePalma's sacrifice fly plated Gnibus to put the Mountain Cats on top.
 
Clarion came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame.  Alexis Valencia scored from third on a Mia Smith wild pitch to knot it at one and Delanie Davison singled home Jordy Best to make it 2-1.
 
The Mountain Cats loaded the bases to start the top of the fourth and promptly regained the lead with three runs.  After Smith scored on a Golden Eagles' throwing error, McDonough was hit by a pitch that forced Gianna Surra home, and Coe's foul out sacrifice fly scored Krista Brunson.
 
Pugh, JessicaHowever, Clarion struck for five runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by Best's two-out, two run single to right field, that put the Golden Eagles in front, 7-4.
 
Ashley Perdicaris held the Mountain Cats off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh to record the complete-game victory for the Golden Eagles.
 
Smith and Gnibus both had two hits and an RBI for Pitt-Johnstown, while Coe and DePalma drove in one run each.  Julia Mooney and McDonough also collected one hit apiece.
 
Smith allowed seven runs on six hits in the loss.  Smith fanned nine and walked seven.
 
In game two, Clarion jumped out to a 2-0 first inning lead on Davison's RBI groundout and Emily Buchleitner's run-scoring single up the middle, before Best tripled home Valencia and Kathryn O'Horo in a three-run Golden Eagles' second inning that extended it to 5-0.
 
Jenna Tallman's single through the left side with two outs in the top of the fourth scored DePalma to get a run back for Pitt-Johnstown, and McDonough had an infield single and scored on Mooney's double to the gap in right center to cut the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the fifth.
 
The Mountain Cats battled all the way back to tie it at five with three runs in the sixth on RBI singles from Coe, Gnibus, and McDonough.
 
Clarion regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Jessica Pugh's two-out, pinch hit double chased Brunson home from first to tie it at six in the top of the seventh.
 
However, in the bottom of the seventh, led off with a single, moved worked her way to third and scored on Brooke Dobson's single through the left side to give the Golden the 7-6, walk-off victory.
 
McDonough had two hits, an RBI, and a run, Brunson added two hits and scored two runs, and Brianna Surra tallied two of Pitt-Johnstown's 12 hits.  Mooney and Pugh each had a double and an RBI, and Gnibus, Tallman, and Coe all had a hit and drove in a run.
 
Mahlon Yonkin suffered the loss in relief of Addison Hilligsberg.  Yonkin gave up two runs on five hits, while striking out three and no allowing a walk.  Hilligsberg gave up five runs on six hits over the first 1.2 innings.
 
With the sweep, Clarion improved to 10-22 overall and 6-10 in the PSAC West.
 
The Mountain Cats will celebrate Senior Day with a conference doubleheader against Edinboro, Friday afternoon at the Pitt-Johnstown Softball Field, before playing a pair of PSAC West games at Slippery Rock on Monday.
