Softball Splits Doubleheader Against IUP

Indiana, Pa.

McDonough, MeghanPitt-Johnstown pounded out 12 hits in a 10-2 victory in the opener before dropping a 6-2 decision in game two to split a PSAC West doubleheader at IUP on Friday afternoon.

The Mountain Cats concluded the day at 11-28 (8-18 PSAC) with just two games left in the regular-season.

Game One—Pitt-Johnstown 10, IUP 2

Senior Julia Mooney went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored as the Mountain Cats notched at least 10 runs for the third time in five games and the fourth time overall. Sophomore 

Meghan McDonough added two hits, scored twice and knocked in a run. She was hit by a pitch in the first and came around to score when Mooney followed with an RBI double. 

That was the only run either team pushed across until the fifth when the Mountain Cats scored six times on five hits, all of the damage being done with two outs.

Krista Brunson doubled with one out before scoring on a McDonough single and an IUP error. Mooney belted a 2-run home run that extended it to 4-0 before Isabella DePalma slugged a solo shot as part of back-to-back homers for a 5-0 advantage.

Gianna Surra reached on an error and Mia Smith walked to set up Audrey Paterson, whose 2-RBI triple pushed it to 7-0.

After IUP scored a run in the fifth to break up the shutout, Pitt-Johnstown tacked on three more In the seventh. Jenna Tallman doubled home two runs and came around to score on a single from Brunson.

Smith picked up the complete-game win in the circle, giving up just two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

Game Two—IUP 6, Pitt-Johnstown 2

Tables turned in the second game when IUP scored the first six runs of the game and never looked back. The Hawks scored one in the first, three in fourth and two in the fifth.

Pitt-Johnstown broke up the shutout in the sixth when Paterson singled and moved into scoring position on a single from Tallman. Paterson then stole third to set up Brunson, who cracked an RBI single to make it 6-1.

McDonough doubled to start the seventh, advanced to third when Mooney reached on an error and scored on a single from DePalma.

Mahlon Yonkin was tagged with the loss, surrendering all six runs and scattering 11 hits over six innings.

Pitt-Johnstown will wrap up the 2025 season by hosting Clarion for a PSAC West doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
