Mountain Cats Walk-Off Nightcap to Secure Split Against California

Johnstown, Pa.

Roberts, BrodyPitt-Johnstown struck first but suffered a 2-1 loss in the opener before capturing a 7-6 walk-off victory in the nightcap to close out a PSAC West doubleheader against California (Pa.) on Thursday afternoon at Point Stadium.

The Mountain Cats wrapped the day at 14-32 (5-21) and will conclude their season with another doubleheader against the Vulcans on Friday afternoon.

Game One—California 2, Pitt-Johnstown 1

Pitt-Johnstown outhit the Vulcans 5-4 in the opener, but could only push across one run. That came in the second inning when Devon Boyles launched a solo home run over the left field wall for a 1-0 lead.

California took the lead for good in the third on a two-run home run from Ryan Callahan.

Aidan Steinbugl singled with two outs in the third, but was thrown out while trying to stretch it to a double. Karson Reffner cracked a two-out single in the fifth but was left stranded. Brody Roberts recorded an infield single to lead off the sixth but was erased when the Vulcans turned a double play.

Seth Shuey took the tough-luck loss, giving up just two unearned runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings of relief. Aiden Coleman started and surrendered just one hit in 1 2/3 innings.

Michael Valente picked up the win on the mound for the Vulcans.

Game Two—Pitt-Johnstown 7, California 6

Turcovski, JustinThe Mountain Cats took a 6-1 advantage into the final frame, but couldn't hang on when the Vulcans scored five runs on two hits to knot the game at 6-all.

But they quickly redeemed themselves in the bottom of the inning. Zac LeGars walked to lead off and moved all the way to third on a single to right by Roberts. One batter later, LeGars sprinted home on a wild pitch that sent players spilling out onto the field in celebration.

Pitt-Johnstown pounded out 10 hits, in large part thanks to Roberts, who went 3-for-4 and scored twice.

Justin Turcovski belted a two-run homer in the third that extended the Mountain Cats' lead to 4-1. He finished with two hits and two runs scored. Calvin Iseminger also notched two hits, including an RBI double in the second that made it 2-1.

After the Vulcans posted a run in the first, Boyles doubled to lead off the second and later scored on an RBI single from Logan Ferguson.

Roberts and Turovski connected on back-to-back singles to start the fifth before they both crossed home on a 2-RBI single from Erik Rhodes that increased the lead to 6-1.

Brian Pirone received a no-decision after allowing three earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks in six-plus innings of work. Luke Lea came on in relief of Rhodes to get three outs in the seventh and earn the win.

Meanwhile, Ryan Sluk did not record an out in the seventh and was tagged with the loss for the Vulcans, who ended the day at 33-10 (18-7 PSAC).

Pitt-Johnstown will wrap up its regular-season with a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. from EQT Park in Washington.
