The Pitt-Johnstown women's volleyball team wrapped up its non-conference slate on a high note with an efficient 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-13) sweep over Elizabeth City State during the IUP Crimson Hawk Classic on Saturday evening.
The Mountain Cats finished the tournament 3-1 after also claiming wins over Charleston (WV) and Chestnut Hill College.
Caroline Knight paced the Mountain Cats with a team-high 10 kills. Dannika Susko had seven kills and a team-high three blocks. Mallory Pinske contributed six kills and a match-high five service aces. Ellie Zuro Cirino chipped in five kills and two service aces.
Avery Barrett passed out a team-high 16 assists. Abby Berry pitched in 14 assists, six digs and three service aces. Jessica Krug supplied a team-high nine digs.
Up 11-9 in the opening set, an 8-2 flurry was enough to give the Mountain Cats the breathing room they needed to coast from there.
The second frame had a much different feel in the latter stages, with Pitt-Johnstown down 22-19 before storming back with a 4-0 run to go up 23-22. Tied at 23, a service error from Elizabeth City State and a kill from Knight gave the Mountain Cats a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
Holding just an 8-7 lead, the Mountain Cats took over the third set with an 11-0 run, sparked by three kills apiece from Pinske and Knight, to go on top for good.
Pitt-Johnstown will host IUP at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23 to open up its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference slate.
