EDINBORO, Pa. — Vinnie Cugini provided a team-high 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Pitt-Johnstown seized control from the tip in a wire-to-wire 82-68 victory over Edinboro on Wednesday night at McComb Fieldhouse.
Coach Bob Rukavina earned the 575th win of his illustrious 36-year career as the Mountain Cats improved to 10-7 (4-5 PSAC). Rukavina pulled into a tie with Nova Southeastern's Jim Crutchfield for 9th all-time in career victories among active Division II coaches.
Junior forward Baden Forup recorded his team-leading ninth double-double of the year with 20 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Freshman Ryan Calo posted his first career double-double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, all of them career-best marks.
Adam Bilinsky shot 6-for-7 from the floor and finished with 14 points and four assists. Will Kromka chipped in eight points and three boards.
The Mountain Cats rarely missed over the first 20 minutes, while shooting 65.3% (17 of 26) from the floor. That included a 5-for-6 start that manifested into a 12-0 run to open the game that was capped by a conventional three-point play from Bilinsky.
Cugini's 3-pointer at the 12:21 mark extended the lead to 23-8. Despite that advantage being cut to five later in the half, the Mountain Cats carried a 41-33 lead into the break.
Pitt-Johnstown's advantage never dipped below eight points throughout the second half. The Mountain Cats took their largest lead of the night when Calo connected on a jumper that pushed it to 71-49 with about seven minutes remaining.
The Mountain Cats shot a season-best 60.3% (35 of 58) from the field. They currently lead the PSAC in field goal percentage and are second in all of Division II at 51.8%. Pitt-Johnstown held a 41-32 rebounding advantage and a 36-32 edge in points in the paint.
Evan Berger scored a game-high 26 points for the Scots, who dropped to 8-7 (4-4 PSAC).
Pitt-Johnstown will visit Clarion for a 3 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, Jan. 17.
