CALIFORNIA, Pa. — Baden Forup strung together a career-high 32 points, but it wasn't enough for Pitt-Johnstown to complete a second half comeback in a 79-68 setback to California (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
The Mountain Cats fell to 11-10 (5-8 PSAC).
Forup provided his eighth straight and team-leading 14th double-double of the season after dominating the glass with a game-high 17 rebounds. He finished 12 of 15 from the floor and 8 of 9 from the free-throw line.
Will Kromka contributed nine points and four rebounds. Vinnie Cugini and Cedric Rault added eight points apiece.
In a game that featured four lead changes and three ties, Pitt-Johnstown grabbed an early 10-8 lead after Kromka's tip-in at the 14:41 mark of the first half. Forup hit two free throws 45 seconds later that made it 12-11. California (Pa.) responded with eight straight points to take a 19-12 lead that never faded away.
A layup by Cugini with 16 seconds left cut Pitt-Johnstown's halftime deficit to 40-30.
Despite that, the Mountain Cats opened the second half on an 11-4 tear that was capped by Kromka's layup to trim it to 44-41. The Vulcans pushed the lead back to double-digits with 13 minutes left and rode that momentum the rest of the way.
Bryson Lucas recorded a team-high 30 points and 12 rebounds for the Vulcans, who improved to 15-5 (12-1 PSAC).
Pitt-Johnstown will have a week off before visiting Slippery Rock for a 3:30 p.m. tip-off on Saturday, Feb. 7.
